The 100 Ugliest Cars

While not specifically rally related, I have a feeling that this might interest a few folks around here who appear to have some mild interest in automobiles...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.jhtml?xml=/motoring/2008/08/25/mfcars1.xml

My teenage son and I had just finished debating what makes a vehicle "ugly". Obviously, varied opinions must be accepted, but there is often a certain amount of concensus. Two hours later I spied this link -- and two of the cars we were debating were in the top 10!

Enjoy! Note the Targa Tasmania link! (top, left)

This ought to get some sparks flying!

To get the flame wars started, I should step out and indicate some of my agreements and disagreements, so:

UGLY (& way ugly - IMHO): Aston Martin Bulldog (wow, did Aston get this wrong), Lightburn Zeta Sedan (looks "organically" wrong/mutated), Mohs Ostentatienne Opera (YIKES!!!), Tatra T603 (what's that growth in the rear-end?), Reliant Regal/Robin (motorboat tricycle?), Daimler SP250 (can you say "fish-like"?), AMC Gremlins & Pacers (enough said), Fiat Multipla, Pontiac Aztek (#1, and I am not surprised)

Listed, but I don't see it that way: BMW 7 series, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, Porsche Boxster, Jaguar XJ-S, MINI/MINI Clubman!?!?!, Range Rover, Triumph TR-7 Sacrilege!?!?!, Saab 95 V4 - Not great looking, but read below.

"Estate version of the 96, one of the greatest rallying icons of all time" -- Their words... The rally tie-in I needed!!!

A few I agree with most I do not.

My teacher designed for Honda and SAAB and its a tough gig ultimately the suits not the designers have the final word.

My guess is most of these articles are written by dusty old tweed wearing men who refuse to look past the nineteen thirties for design and elegance. Harley Earl is dead and gone we cant resurrect him and Chris Bangle is doing a pretty damn good job at BMW.

Probably because it's one of the best looking cars to come from the last century.

The guy who owns the trans shop across the street used to own a Studebaker dealership. He has several Avantis, as well as just about six of everything to build a new one from the ground up. When he saw the writing on the wall, he bought up as much stock as he could. Storage spaces filled with obscure pieces of trim, glass, exhaust pipes, etc. None of it for sale, yet.

Well, hell, it's been nearly 50 years, why start selling it now? :)

Since it seems to have been a popular vote by Telegraph readers, the results are partly popularity contest, rather than a true judgement of ugliness. They are also skewed by the fact that most Telegraph readers didn't have direct contact with some of the less well known North American gaffes.

In retrospect, I should have noted what Adrian has pointed out (along with others); but regardless, the list was exceedingly interesting to view and contemplate!

I had forgotten about AMC Matadors - yep, UGLY!

I cannot believe that Vegas and Pintos DIDN'T made the list...

Oh, and some of the comments at the conclusion of the list are great!

Oh yes, the Mighty Datsun F-10!

UGH! Forgot about that one. I remember walking down the street when I was 10-years old and saw my first Datsun F-10. I always liked all Datsuns up to that point. I found this shot as well of someone with a good sense of humor.

How 'bout this laughable piece of poo?

I like the European variation on the name. Kinda laughable in a way like the tiny Pontiac LeMans that was sold in the late-80's. I dig the line "Enter the rallye you've been waiting for?"

Ugly in an interesting way perhaps, but it is remarkable to get up close and check out the level of detail in the chromework on cars of this era. Some amazing craftmanship went into them.

Still can't beat 1958.
