Volvo 142s are alive and well in 2010. We have three rallies under our belt (restraint system) this year and will be at the Idaho Rally in July.

Shane, I saw your pictures from the 2004 GGVOC Davis car show. Our 142 rally car took 2nd in class at the 2010 Davis show, dirt and all.

Jim I was happy to see a 142 out there back in 2000ish I had picked up a 144 Rally Car from Topi and I absolutely loved that car but I also had a single seat sports racer at the same time and one had to go, I sold the Volvo and kept the D-sports racer............man I miss that Volvo.

Dan Thiel, from Rochester, NY, had several 142s over the years in the mid-70' to mid-80s. I rode with Danny for 5 years and we had a couple top-10 finishes in the US and Canada. The car was solid and fast. It was pretty light, too; plastic hood, fenders, trunk lid and doors. The doors were a bit scary and got replaced with steel after a bit.

We used a B20 bored to 2.2 liter and a Volvo Marine cam with twin Solex carbs. The trans. was mated to a P1800 overdrive modified to work down to second gear, which gave 7 speeds.

After 5 years, the shell started to come apart and the car was replaced by a 240 Turbo built by Wayne Baldwin. That one was real fast.

The former Jeff Griffin 142 at Gorman sometime in the 90's. Apologies since I don't know the photographer, this was given to me by the current owner.

And Phil -- what happened to that 240 turbo you mentioned? What was the last paint scheme on it? I also heard there was a Karl Scheible 242T around the same time.

I'm currently sanding the paint off of my 240. Being Malik's old ride with 80-some-odd documented rallies on it (I have forgotten the official count), I've found about 5 different layers of paint jobs on it so far. Cheers.

As I recall, Dave Marzetti (in Ontario) owns Bo Skowronnek's old 240. I think the car is still around, but not sure when it last ran.

But I remember Dan Thiel. He was pretty competitive with the 142. I ran against him in a few events.

Baldwins - Wayne & Debby

Wayne worked for Volvo US corporate (still does, I believe), and rallied a series of Volvos (not with any official backing). They did very well.

They always were a hoot to compete against. Although Debby tended to zone out when they were on transits - often just following us. Several times we purposely took them way off course to see how far they would follow and if she would wake up (she never did) (this was entirely legal back then - there was no such thing as being illegaly off course).

press on,

This thread warms the cockles of my heart! We've been pretty competitive in local TSD events in our '70 144s since we started a couple of years ago. Would love to take the old beast (probably after a body swap to remove the speed holes) out stage rallying, and it's great to know you guys are out there. Here's some pics.

Volvo's

I met this guy on the hill at PPIHC this summer, really nice car but was running WAY rich so I loaned him some leaner Weber main jets. He has rallied this car all over, check the stickers. IMHO 122s are way cool looking.

'Just wondering how well Volvo 142s went in rallying back in the day'

In reply to the original question when this thread started 8 years ago:

Well, if I were to tell you that a 142 took a podium on a WRC event, would you believe me?

The 1973 1000 Lakes Rally (or Rally Finland as it is now known) - Markku Alen entered his very first WRC event in a 142 and finished 2nd overall, here is a photo:

Hannu Mikkola also entered a 142 in the same event but retired.

My father bought Bo's old Volvo and drove it on and off. I drove it to a 4th overall at STPR and had a couple of other top finishes. It was too old to patch together and I sold it to a person in Canada who wanted to get into rally. That car was scary fast!

I competed at that rally and remember that Mikkola was doing very well until his co-driver had to quit the event and go to hospital when his seat broke after landing on a jump and he injured his back.

I saw a video on the google/utub that showed that jump. I think it said that they finished the stage and turned in their time card and then they drove straight to the hospital.

just watched it again: He was disqualified because he dropped his navigator off at the hospital before reporting to the finish.

these old videos are some of the best rally videos out there. while the new stuff is fun there is something about the way these old videos just have character and are a hoot to watch.
