'Just wondering how well Volvo 142s went in rallying back in the day'

Well, if I were to tell you that a 142 took a podium on a WRC event, would you believe me?


The 1973 1000 Lakes Rally (or Rally Finland as it is now known) - Markku Alen entered his very first WRC event in a 142 and finished 2nd overall, here is a photo:

Hannu Mikkola also entered a 142 in the same event but retired.

I competed at that rally and remember that Mikkola was doing very well until his co-driver had to quit the event and go to hospital when his seat broke after landing on a jump and he injured his back.

 

I saw a video on the google/utub that showed that jump. I think it said that they finished the stage and turned in their time card and then they drove straight to the hospital.

just watched it again: He was disqualified because he dropped his navigator off at the hospital before reporting to the finish.

these old videos are some of the best rally videos out there. while the new stuff is fun there is something about the way these old videos just have character and are a hoot to watch.

 

My father bought Bo's old Volvo and drove it on and off. I drove it to a 4th overall at STPR and had a couple of other top finishes. It was too old to patch together and I sold it to a person in Canada who wanted to get into rally. That car was scary fast!

 

Just a reminder that Jim Walker finished second overall in a WRC event in his Volvo 142.

 

Many apologies Doug, it is easy for we Europeans to forget about the WRC events in North America.

1992 SCCA Press On Regardless Pro Rally » Jan Jolles / Steve Finney took fifth overall in their classic Volvo 140.

 

And the old 122's could move pretty quick too!
