Ladies & Gentlemen:

On a first note, this is being posted in the US forum because interest probably will cross divisions. On a second note, my inquiry is as a SE-DIV rallyist and organizer, and in no way should be construed as an affront to VIR's home region, the North Carolina Region SCCA, or as any type of official involvement by the Chattanooga Region SCCA.

I am simply trying to gauge the interest of competitors and workers for a November 2, 2002 Rally at VIR, using the European Rally School's stages, in division for SE-DIV, and perhaps even NE-DIV (since Rapidan was). Cost would be $250.00-$300.00 range for 30 to 40 stage miles over the course of Saturday.

I need to know in order to determine whether it would economically feasible to put together the event in light of the cost of the facility and the cost of putting on the rally, as well as whether we would be able to assemble enough workers to put it on.

If you have an interest, please contact me via e-mail at [email protected] and please as well indicate whether your interest is as competitor or as worker.

Thank you,

Wilson von Kessler

RE: Will you commit to a VIR rallysprint on November 2, 2002?

Wilson,

FYI - at the point a RallySprint goes over 30 stage miles, it then becomes a Coefficient 2 ClubRally. I don't think there's such a thing as a Rallysprint over 30 stage miles, if I am reading the rules correctly from page 11 of the 2002 rulebook...

D. Length

...1. ProRally blah, blah, blah...

...2. ClubRally Events

.......a. Coefficient 1 competition includes two distinct types of events: pure stage format rallies and rallysprint events. Rallies must have a minimum of ten stage miles and a minimum of two stages in the course. Stage mileage for this level of rally is limited to less than 30 miles. No minimum mileage requirement is applied to rallysprint events.

.......b. Coefficient 2 event must have a minimum of 30 and less than 65 stage miles and a minimum of five stages in the route.

.......c. Coefficient 3 event must include a minimum of 65 and no more
than 100 stage miles in the route. These will tend to be larger events resembling ProRally events.

$250-$300 would be a little steep for a one-day Coef 2 ClubRally, and most RallySprints that I've seen have gone for between $75 and $150.

You are correct, but if the day is split up into two events, then it can still be run as two so called "rallysprints."

However, this event would be envisioned as a stage type rally, with co-driver, etc., etc. So call it a coefficient one or two ClubRally depending on how it is done. However, it would be one stage (Ivor's school roads) run in one direction 3-4 times, and then in the other direction 3-4 times. What I am not clear on is whether Ivor can put together a 5 mile or an 8 mile stage.

I note that Rapidan called itself a rallysprint, but it really wasn't. Ergo "rallysprint." Perhaps I am using the term more so to indicate a rally in a closed venue.

Rapidan's entry fee (the only other "rallysprint" I know of in the Eastern US) was $250.00. Low fees would be great. However, when you have to pay substantial sums to use the property, the price goes up. SCCA insurance alone is at least $50.00 a car, and could be around $75.00 a car (for a coefficient 2). Sanction fee is on top of that. Many many many other costs. There is no profit motive in what I am doing. Frankly, I am just seeing if this could be a break even exercise, and help fill the SE-DIV schedule where the Tarmac Expresses fell out. I know the Chattanooga region does not want to organize a rally 6 hours away from it that will lose money for the club. I assume the North Carolina Region would not want to support a new event that would not break even (and frankly, Road Racing is a budget drainer for SCCA regions, and is usually supplemented with Solo II money).

So, I am simply trying to see if there is interest in the event under the terms set out above. If there is an objection to price, or mileage, or whatever, then that will be reflected in the responses to me, and it will not become a reality.

RE: Will you commit to a VIR rallysprint on November 2, 2002?

Mike:

What is being proposed would be either 2 coefficient one events over the same single stage, or 1 coefficient 2 event over the same single stage. It would be a stage between 5 and 8 miles in length. It would be run in both directions over the course of the day. Total mileage either way would be at the top end of coefficient one, or the low end of coefficient two.

However, stage rallying rules would apply, e.g., co-driver requirement, etc.

Please see my reply above.

Go to www.vireurorally.com to check out an aerial view of the site, ASAP. You might get the scoop.

Oh, by the way, Wilson, Hell yeah! Assuming the entry fee isn't TOO far outta whack! I'll have to see if the great co-driver-wuss-out applies to this one as well...;)

Bimmers from hell!

Folks:

The effort to schedule a Rallysprint at Ivor's School has been superceded by the Coal Creek Rally which will take place on November 23, 2002 outside of Knoxville, Tennessee. Please see the SE-DIV forum, and www.rivergate5speed for more information on same as it develops.

Thanks to all those that responded. From my understanding, there will be a European Style Rallycross at VIREurorally in January.

Again, thanks for the interest, and we will be in contact with you regarding Coal Creek.

Sincerely,

Wilson C. von Kessler
