Wilson Jr looks at WRC step
Turkey - Ford - 30/06/2004 10:30:04

Rising British rally ace Matthew Wilson, the son of former British Rally Champion and works Ford team boss Malcolm Wilson, is in line to make a dramatic step up to the World Rally Championship next year according to Motorsport News.

If the 17-year-old makes the move, likely to be in a Ford Focus run by Wilson Snr?s M-Sport team, he will be the youngest driver ever to compete in the WRC, beating previous record holder Jarri Matti Latvala, who was 18 years old. He could be forced to miss the season-opener in Monte Carlo, though, as he will be too young under FIA regulations.

Wilson Jr is keen to learn the ropes at the highest level, and feels that competing on actual WRC events will be the best way to gain experience.

?It was a bit of a shock to find out that we will be doing it,? he said. ?But it?s definitely the best way to learn. We always said that as soon as we could get into the WRC, that would be the goal. It?s something that is within reach, given the set-up that we?ve got.?
