The early entry list for the Paris-Dakar showed a Canadian entry, Lambelin/Corne driving a Toyota. I now see no reference to this team in the standings. Does anybody know what happened to this entry?

On one of the early reports on the dakar website it mentioned that the Canadian car never showed up for scrutineering.

A major sponsor pulled out at the last minute and the team had to withdraw due to a lack of funds.

However, Maryline is still attending the rally to make contacts and prepare for the 2006 event.

Send him lots of "be careful" thoughts. Fabrizio Meoni, a former winner and perennial top competitor on bikes, crashed heavily yesterday and "despite prompt medical attention could not be revived." This is turning into an unusually lethal Dakar.

I was impressed by Kankkunen's comments:

Dakar too tough, says Kankkunen

Juha Kankkunen believes that the Dakar Rally has become too demanding and that it imposes unacceptable demands on amateurs.

?It?s a lot shorter. They have only used all the really bad places and left all the nice places away. We used to arrive at the [stage] finish 13.00-14.00, but now we struggle to finish in daylight, so the privateers struggle to finish before midnight. Most of the entry is privateers. You cannot organise a rally only for works teams. It seems to be difficult to find a right way to do it,? Kankkunen said.

The 1988 winner and four times World Rally Champion has returned to the event this year for the first time since, driving for Volkswagen. His views were publicly supported by VW Motorsport chief Kris Nissen.

Bob Bergman is doing well for a first timer, he is up to 76th now. The only Canadian entry!
