our luck they'll be on at the same time, or they'll pre-empt each other in a freak programming cross band interaction and we'll be left with fishing and bowling on TV

It was all over my TV screen last week. It was broadcast on the Science Channel. Couldn't argue with the (rally car) choices - I'll keep you in suspense unless you think I should spill.

The show on right after it was a joke. The top 5 muscle cars. The Aston Martin Vantage, the Bentley Blower (1928?), the TVR Tuscan, the 911 Turbo and then finally, a token American muscle car - the Dodge Charger R/T. Don't disagree with the Charger (or the 911 for that matter) - but you're going to have a hard time selling the British cars as the top muscle cars here in North America. It's rather obvious where the judges come from...

I have a DVD called "The worlds greatest rally cars", I wonder if it's the same thing. Actually it's probably several hours long if you watch allt he cars so that would take some editing :)

What a load of crap. :(

Especially after having watched the Evolution of Rallying last week.

I don't know. I thought it was fun at least. Certainly, it beats bowling or yet another "chopper"/oh-my-god-there's-no-time-to-do-this-insane-project show. And, it was in a good time slot. We need more 'rally-love' out there in good time slots. But, it doesn't come close to the Evoution of Rallying (a PAL format DVD one of our club members purchased, and was shown at the MCO rally group meeting last week). EoR was super fun and is well worth a few serious viewings. Highly recommended. (I did like the top 5 sportscars preceding the rally car show).

OK Doug, what are your top 5 Rally cars?

1) Toyota Corolla :)
?
?
?
?

I have to agree that they seem to have been a bit 'off' in their selections (do the lancer and the impreza both rate top 5?)

I think it is reasonably safe to say that the Audi Quattro changed the face of rallying ... The stratos is just WAY out there, and the RS200 ... a representative of an era, perhaps the R5 or 205 would have been a better example?

when looking for a top 5 of rally cars I think you kinda need
1) current state of the art
2) Biggest change in the sport
3) Classic 2wd challenger
4) a GrpB car
5) sentimental fave ... Mini? MkII Escort?

Keith:

I thought the show was a load of crap, not necessarily the selections.

Hard to argue with the Quattro and Stratos, as each changed the face of rallying.

The entire Mitsubishi Evo series certainly would merit consideration, but not the current Evo which was the sole focus of the show and which has been a total failure as a rally car.

The Subaru Impreza series of rally cars is valid, but once again the show just showed a standard STI driving back and forth on a dock somewhere in Japan.

Ford RS200? Personnaly, I would choose a Lancia Delta S4 or a Peugeot 205T16.

My top five - Quattro, Stratos, Lancia Delta series, Ford Escort series, Peugeot 205T16.

I would also like to throw in the Renault Alpines of the early 1970s, as they are still the prettiest rally cars of all time.

For those of you who are only familiar with the last 10 years of modern WRC rallying, do yourself a favour and get a copy of the Evolution of Rallying. It documents the sport over the last five decades of the 20th century.

I certainly admire the modern WRC cars, but they probably deserve their own top five list.

I thought it was fun and frothy. Obviously not a serious analysis of what makes a rally car great, but harmless fun. I mean, saying that the Impreza can't be the number 1 ultimate rally car because it gets bad gas mileage? After all, we all know what a fantastically fuel-efficient commuter car the Straots was...

My totally subjective unjustified top 5:

Quattro
Stratos
Dakar Tatra
Delta S4
Mini

Paul:

I like your top five also.

However, if I were to choose a Dakar truck, it would have to be the DAF "push me - pull me" truck which Jan De Rooy (spelling?) drove on the Dakar and I believe won a stage outright against all of the factory rally cars (typing this quickly at work, so I am sure that Adrian will correct me, if I am wrong).

RE: My Top Five

I think with all the recent and charged attention being given to getting sponsors, growing the sport bla bla bla, and TV coverage, we should all be thankful that SOMEBODY ELSE paid for a show about rally-anything. Not Subaru, not RDG, not CARS, not ME, not YOU, well, you all get the picture.

We can discuss the cars they chose, or should have, but frankly, we need MORE shows that showcase the sport of rally, paid for by somebody else!! It cost us nothing. How can you lose in that sitation? Obviously, if you want a good treatment of the subject, this is NOT the show to watch.

So, given all that, I'm pretty happy about the show *in general*. It was done in a hip/mod hint of sixties sort of way. If it makes somebody think, "hey rallying is way cool, I should go find out how to get involved, where's the local chapter" then it's a good show!

Geesh, we get a FREEBIE, and we all complain about it! (no offence to anyone, but keep an open mind if it's free advertising).

Craig

ps-I agree with Doug's picks, and a few of the others. The Impreza/Evo thing was a little misplaced. I expected the Integrale, or 205, or Alpines, Escorts, even a Mini.
