Wear clothing tucked in or use rubberbands around sleave ends/pant's end.
Wear a hat with a brim all around.
Don't walk through or stand in tall grass.
Occasionally check shoes and clothing.
Wear light colors without patterns so that ticks stand out on them.
Works very well.

I remove all my "field clothes" and do a tick check before I enter my abode, and I haven't had one get me yet. (I work in the woods most every day)
Pull off the tick with tweezers and soak the critter in rubbing alcohol. If you do get one, make sure you get the entire "snout" out or the skin area becomes infected. I've pulled ticks out of some weird places after a few Headwaters events, but I'll stop right there.
