Primitive Racing again teams up with Challenge Driving Events for the Thunderbird Winter Rally (see www.rallybc.com)

The Alcan winning team of Eklund, Kraushaar, and Richardson will contest the rigorous Thunderbird Rally this weekend in British Columbia as a test for their new Cooper SiO ice and snow tires and Subaru Rally equipment.

The team will have 2 unlimited class cars entered (Eklund and Kraushaar) and 3 other team cars in Novice, Historic and Paper classes (Evans, Childs, and Huhn.

These 2-day brisk TSD events in Canada have a long heritage and are an absolute blast to drive. Often ending with a rallycross on ice (some frozen lake), these rallies test driving skill and rally navigation as well as pure endurance. Look for results to post sometime next week on the rallybc website.

The T-Bird Rally was a BLAST! Final results are NOW posted at: www.rallybc.com/archives/2003/2003_tbird.html

Not quite as much snow as one might like (a fair amount of treacherous mud and mud/ice mix on Day 1) but a terrific rally (brisk, gravel TSD)!!!

Lee and Rod Sorenson from CA kicked everyone's booty in a 2.5RS and making mostly all zeros except for a few points on Leg 2 of the first day. They ended the day with 22 points. Peter Hill (former Canadian Rally champ)and Shawn Bishop were second in a WRX with 23 points and the Primitive Racing team (Paul Eklund and Kala Rounds-rally novice) were tied for 3rd place overall with 32 points. 60 cars entered the event, including 15 Unlimited Class entries.

The Primitive Team was using an Alfa Elite (first time either team member had used a full rally computer) and were hesitant to make mid-course distance corrections on the first night for fear of messing up the calcs. Therefore the team simply tried to not spin any wheels in the slippery conditions. The plan worked and they were thrilled with our overnight standing.

But Kala wanted to do better and asked long-time rally navigator Larry Richardson from Team Challenge Driving Events to show her how to actually use her B-Box... Day 2 found the Primitive Team making frequent minor mileage adjustments and the pair zeroed almost every control point (except for one were they made a CAST change at slightly the wrong place and got a 3...

So while the Sorenson's (Lee and Rod) didn't miss a beat and took the win with 23 points, Eklund and Rounds moved into second place overall with 35 points narrowly edging out Hill and Bishop with 36 points!

Kraushaar and Richardson went off on "Wallace's Corner" and finished back in the standings. Scott Huhn and Kristen Tabor finished 2nd in the PAPER Class in a 2.2 Outback Sport Wagon. Satch Carlson finished 2nd in his finnicky SAAB Sonnet in Historic Equipped Class. Fred Ankeny was fist in his SAAB 96.

Several other cars had similar offs but no serious shunts despite the tricky conditions. One section of the Eileen Lake regularity was renamed "The Luge" by all competitors. We found the back end of our Subaru 2.5TS Wagon passing us as we came down the ice hill. We just floated broadside down the road until I could get the back end to come back behind the car. No worries...

A few found the edge of the road in that section. Our Cooper ice and snow tires worked flawlessly. We ran 28PSI front and 30PSI rear and gave the car good balance. I probably could have come down in pressure all the way around, but stuck with those settings 'cuz they seemed to work pretty well.
