>This is where our leaders think motor sport is heading?
Well no, but it does get our name out in front of the kids. Remember how when you were a kid, you put cards in the spokes of the covered wagon?
How

It appears to be mostly an insurance deal. I don't see a lot of local effort required. And local is where the tech inspectors will come from.

I hope we can convert the "drifters" into something worthwhile.

No, This is Motorsport

The kids love it. The kids are the future. Embrace the future.

Seriously.

In all honesty I can't say I know much about it, but catching a wave that's very popular is not a bad idea. I'm sure it will generate revenue, new members and MAYBE give some sideways drivers a venue to show off a bit.

I went to a drift exhibition here at the NOPI Nationals in Atlanta, and found a lot of "drifters" receptive to the idea of rally racing. I know if there was one tarmac rally in the states that it would probably provide a better avenue for crossover, but that is opening up a big can of worms for a rally community that is already overrun with the wigly bastards as is.

I personally like drifting as a fun "sport" to show off in, and from the reaction in California to the recently held D1 Grand Prix, I think it has a good future. Now only we could sell them dirt tires and get them off the track....

there is a variation of this that may be closer to racing and is gaining popularity in japan now; gymkhana. it is a blend of drifting and autox. driving sports magazine had a sidebar on it in the last issue.

Joe,
it is where Promotion and hype is going, and it is in essence what the demands of a "TV product" untimately leads to.

made up, pre packaged, easy to cover with minimal crew with minimal creativity, lots of breaks in the 'action' to fill out the thin field, pointless, forgetable, and no fundemental differences in the 'personalities'.
It really is what happens when the BUSINESS is the primary foucus.

Joe, at least these guys didn't come in and just announce they were taking over and changing significant portions of the rules with the willing collusion of people whose job was to protect and serve the interests of the memebership.
The are supplying all the manpower and promo stuff thenmselves it seems.
They will be no great loss to US and honestly speaking, I have no interest in any other car motorsport other than rally so this takes nothing away from us.

And I doubt that the kids in the grandstands will be likely candidates for turning into rally-pervs, the will likey be candidates _watching_ for the next waaaaay rad thing: free skydiving beds onto skislopes followed by reciting slam-poetry.

it's the NEXT BIG THING!!!!!

Oh and comrade Smith, I think the analogy is closer to this is the World Wresting Federation of motorsport.

>make the cage requirements the same as rally and we'll have

Hey Jason, a couple or three years ago Eric Eaton and I went back and forth over wwhat he percieved as the HUGEHUGE HUGE!! imminent upswing in rally participation from the Import street scene.
I suggested when the kids have spent all their dough on the hilariously hideous bodykits and 20" bling bling rims (with MAX 4 turns of electrical tape around the rim for the ultimate in low profile look!!) and 6" chrome DTM tailpipes, and have pulled there hats past their eyebrows they think they are cool, heaving all that stuff in the dumpster would be essentially saying that that stuff was NOT cool and so unlikely that they would entertain the idea that they wern't cool.
Anybody know of any Bling-bling Boys coming over to the Dark and Dirty side?

RE: This is Racing????No, it's Spectacle,

Spectacle it is. Complete with the French judge. And apparently so important to the future of SCCA that Steve Johnson didn't want to dilute the importance of its announcement at the SEMA show by adding something so trivial as the announcement of a national ProRally sponsor.

Flash and glitter is the Spitzner legacy for rally.
This drifting stuff complements the rally trends of
the past 5 years.

SCCA is already replacing club rallying with rally cross.

In a few more years ProRally will be replaced with stadium racing.
They might even include a few plastic trees for atmosphere.

R.I.P. SCCA rallying :(

Sorry to tell you but flash and glitter is the legacy of motorsport! Especially if you want someone else to pay for it

Drifting is a marketing dream, it takes the best of rally-sliding cars and good car control- and the best of the import car scene-bolt on go fast parts on street cars- and puts it into an easy to manage, spectate and promote package. It would be foolish for the SCCA or any automotive based company to overlook this "spectacle".
Having just returned from SEMA where there was 3 rally cars and a couple thousand "bling, bling" cars it would not take a rocket scientist to figure out where to put your money

This is good news! Let them spend money on drifting,
driftwood, anything but rally! Then rallying can return
to its roots, and the glitz and glamour freaks can go
chase something else.

There are many of us who do rally (or have in the past)
who don't care for spectators, TV, or any type of publicity.

You're welcome to go photograph your "bling, bling" stuff,
make millions of dollars and leave rallying alone.
