A colorful one-hour documentary on the inaugural Targa Newfoundland international rally for historic, classic and modern sporting cars will make its U.S. television debut on Speed Channel on May 2, 2003, the show's producers have announced.

'Targa Newfoundland: An Automotive Adventure,' will air in prime time - 7:00 p.m. Eastern (8:30 p.m. in Newfoundland) - on Friday, May 2 and be repeated several times thereafter.

The production, by Toronto's TV2GO Inc., follows competitors in the first Targa-style rally in North America as they negotiate more than 2,000 kilometres (about 1,300 miles) of route through the rugged and scenic eastern and central portions of the Canadian island province, including 500 kilometres (310 miles) of competition on high-speed Targa stages over closed roads. The event ran for six days during the third week of September, 2002, and hosted Australian, American and Canadian competitors in a fascinating array of sporting cars, from a 1938 Alfa Romeo Mille Miglia Spyder to a modern four-wheel-drive turbo Porsche.

British fans will also get an opportunity to see the production when it is distributed via satellite April 21 on Sky Sports 3 (6:00 p.m. local time on the World Motorsports program) and repeated the following day (4:30 p.m.) on Sky Sports 1.

The French language sports network RDS first aired a version of the show in Quebec in December while an English version debuted on the national Global Television Network in Canada in January and has since been seen on a number of Canadian cable outlets.

"It's hard to really appreciate Targa Newfoundland until you experience it," says rally organizer Bob Giannou, "but this is the next best thing. It's not only great rally coverage, it's great entertainment set against the rugged, beautiful scenery of Newfoundland."

"I believe this showcases our province to an audience that might have never considered us as a destination before," adds Giannou. "It's not only good television, it's good tourism."

The 2003 version of Targa Newfoundland will again be a six-day, 2,000-plus kilometre automobile adventure for the owners of great sporting cars from around the world. This year's event will start and finish in St. John's and run September 13 through September 21.

Patterned after the successful Targa Tasmania (Australia) and Targa New Zealand events, Targa Newfoundland was created to provide the owners of these pedigree machines the opportunity to drive them the way they were intended to be driven, safely and in the spirit of goodwill and good competition.

Targa Newfoundland is owned and organized by Newfoundland International Motorsports and is sanctioned by the Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS). Targa Newfoundland 2003 is listed on the FIA calendar.
