This is a shameless personnel plug for episode 8 of the hit international TV show Full Metal Challenge, staring The Hot Rods from California and their machine the Double Dub, driven by 2000 ProRally Rookie of the Year Jay Streets, me. Brought to you by the same people responsible for the Junk Yard Wars phenomenon RDF media, and featuring the ever so Lovely Cathy Rodgers along with the nothing if not over the top Henry Rollins.
Episode 8 premiers tonight, December 8th and repeated on Wednesday the 11th on TLC, The Learning Channel, check your local listings for times.
It's not Rally but it's not half bad. Tune in and check it out. If you don't like it I will give you your money back.

Jay,
The boys and I have had tonight on the calendar for a couple of months... I just hope you didn't do anything to embarrass your country! For example; if fell off the rollercoaster like the Chinese team did a couple of weeks ago or couldn't get your vehicle to rotate on the first pass of 10 Pin; YOU WILL NEVER LIVE IT DOWN!

Shame to see you guys go out like that. That was definitely a really interesting idea for the car. That roller coaster looked like quite a great deal of fun, did you get to run it a second time? I still think I'm sure the russians "drop a wheel off" in there somewhere, and thanks to them, for once you didn't have the ugliest car in the event. }> (kidding of course.)

Jay,
LOVED the Double Dub! Really some bad luck... without the steering problem you'd have surely come in 2nd in 10 pin and made it to sumo... nice driving on the roller coaster; that steering looked like a real handful.

Very nice sportsmanlike touch putting your license plates on each of your fellow competitors cars for sumo!

oh, my kids LOVED it!

my story

OK, now that the show has aired here is my story.

First of all the challenge we were given was to build a vehicle in our own shop in thirty days. We were given $3000.00 but we could spend more, the catch is they keep the car, (they don?t really blow it up if you haven?t figured that out yet.

We were told the it must:
Be highly maneuverable
Climb a 30% grade
Pull it own weight
Push its own weight
Drive through 24? of water
Survive impact with other vehicles
And offensive weapons were prohibited.
Latter we were told that they had implemented a 3 metric ton weight limit and that the games were not demolition derby. They told us that the only game with the chance of collision was the final game of the day. (I kind of think sumo is more then demo derby.)

That is all we were told, nothing more. In fact we had been on site of three days and still had no idea what the games were going to be. Everything was very top secret.

As far as the show goes, it is a show! It is not a motor sports competition, it is a TV show. I am not trying to make any excuses for any one or anything and I am not saying it is fixed. It is just TV.

The car we built was small. We could have never survived Sumo but we would have liked the opportunity to die a glorious death in the coliseum.

We designed and built the car we did because that is what it took to get on the show. We don?t feel we would have gotten chosen with anything less that the machine we built. It was truly awesome to drive. The hydraulics kept the car locked at wear ever you put the wheel. The steering was from a boats helm pump and had on the fly adjustable ratio from 6 to 2 1/2 turns lock to lock.

Given the completion we were up against we don?t feel all that bad. Our score in bumper cars and roller coaster would have won any of the previous shows games. The luck of the draw put us up against the best machine in the completion.

It was a blast;
I got to do it with my father and a good friend, would I do it again?
I think I?ll sit out and let you have a go.

RE: my story

Hey Jay, way to go! I think we're gonna have to start calling Jay "Mr. T.V." Jay showed me the plans for the car way back at Oregon Trail so I've been looking forward to this for a long time. You're right, you definitely got the bad luck of the draw. You would have kicked butt in any of the other episodes. You just got matched up against the strongest competition in the series. The British and Russian drivers that you were up against were better than most of the previous drivers as well. Oh well, that 8-wheel monster would have squished you like a bug (pardon the pun) in sumo anyway. Like you say, it's not for real, it's just T.V.

Jay
My girls & I loved the show. Their favorite shows are Full Metal Challenge & Junk Yard Wars ! I loved the Christmas Tree Deodorizer hanging from the top of the roll cage! If only the 10Pin would have gone better...but it was fun watching you attack the Rollercoaster-you had a great run.
So what are they going to do with all the cars they aren't really incinerating? Maybe they show up in the finals?

RE: Personnel Plug

Saw some quotes from you and your father in a piece on the show by Automobile magazine. It didn't show your car, but a few other ones were in it and the piece was 3-4 pages describing the atmosphere before and after the competitions. I think it is the newest Automobile, don't know what month for sure, but it has a Mercedes E55 AMG on the front if I recall correctly.
