sad news re: Karl Chevalier, 1940-2003

In the obit below it mentions that Karl was well known in the rally community. Karl competed in 3 One-Lap of America's, finishing 1st in one and third in another. He competed in several Canadian prorally events including Cape Breton to which he drove his rally car 17 hrs up, competed in the stage event, then drove the rally car back home to Burlington, VT. He was Co-Organizer of the DownEast rally tour, a 5,000 mile, 8-day long distant event. He has long been a supporter for local, regional and national rallies, he will be sorely missed by the rally community and his friends.

KARL HENRY CHEVALIER RUTLAND TOWN, VT? Karl Henry Chevalier, 63, of Rutland Town, VT passed away quietly on Nov. 9, 2003, at his home. He was born in Windsor, Oct. 1, 1940, son of Richard and Elizabeth (Brown) Chevalier. Karl grew up in Rutland and attended the University of Vermont. He spent the majority of his professional career in advertising and print media, working for The Burlington Free Press, and preparing advertising material for many local businesses, most notably Nordic Ford/Toyota, Lang Associates, Goss Tire and Bard Home Decorating. Karl also drove buses for the Chittenden South School District and later for Vermont Transit. His love of sports cars and rally racing prevailed throughout his life, and his travels made him well-known in the North American rally community. Karl was also an avid cartoonist, and penned several cartoons and strips related to Vermont history, sports cars and buses. He moved back to Rutland Town to care for his mother, and spent much of his time working on several internet related projects, including CARSoft, a collection of automobile related clip art, and www.LetMeShowYouVermont .com, a site devoted to showing people the sites and attractions in Vermont that many tourists would otherwise miss. His latest project was a chronicle of Horatio Nelson Jackson, a Burlington doctor who became the first person to drive an automobile across the United States in 1903. Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Brown Chevalier, of Rutland Town; a son, Timothy Chevalier, of North Grafton, Mass.; a daughter, Karen Chevalier, of Burlington; a daughter-in-law, Laura Chevalier; two grandchildren, Ryan and Kyra Chevalier; and his former wife, Caroline Winter. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the Tossing Funeral Home. Friends may call Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brownsville Cemetery. Tossing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
