So, is Pat breaking a sweat or just cruising?

Congratulations to Pat and Nathalie Richard on yet another win. And to Matt Iorio and Ole Holter who must be leading every championship by now. Based just on the stage scores, it looked like a cruise for Pat, winning all but one stage and taking the victory by over five minutes. But it's never that easy. Will somebody who was there give us the real story? Will we be seeing the Easy Street Motorsports Open class Subaru again this season? It looks gorgeous. That team is a dominant player in import drag racing. They'd be a great addition to the rally service parks.

The two minute flyer on SS9 didn't hurt, either! You're right, though. No one else was even running the same rally.

What does "flyer" mean? I've read it a few times here before but am not really sure what it is...

Thanks-

SS9 was SS8 run in reverse. If you examine the times for all the cars, then look at Pat's time for SS9, it becomes obvious that the 12 minute time is not possible (at least one poster will claim that the time is legit; there is no Easter Bunny). The seconds are probably correct, but there is an obvious, but perhaps not provable, whole minute error in the stage time. These errors occur from time to time, despite everyone's best efforts to avoid them. When a competitor gets "free" minutes in this fashion, he/she is said to have gotten a flyer. These were pretty common in years gone by, but occur much less frequently today. If it would have affected the results, the second place co-driver probably would have insisted that the stage time be investigated and corrected. Since it didn't matter, he didn't.

YMMV.

RE: So, is Pat breaking a sweat or just cruising?

A flyer is when a team receives a timing error in their favour, i.e. receiving a finish time that has passed before they cross the flying finish, or being allowed to start a stage before the time indicated on their timecard.

In this case it looks as though there was an error in Pat's favour on SS9. He was consistently the fastest driver in the rally, but on this stage, he was almost 2 minutes faster than Matt Iorio on a 14-minute stage.

Is it me or do these results only reflect the USRC not the overall classification.

Every time i try to lookup the results at the rim site some thing new pops up like the 2004 results...

you figure it out

(just got back)

actually, it is NOT a 2 minute flyer, its flat out wrong. We didn't know or notice this until I read this on SS.com. No one brought it up. Had we seen it, we would have corrected it (I like to have the times correct so people can figure out this and that). Our correct time for that stage was high 13s/low 14s (i.e. 1401 hundredths I recall on the slip but our watch was high 13s).

fyi leon if you think I didn't earn it... would have liked to see you try and beat me :)). Look at the 'repeated' stage times it should give you a hint. Car was perfect (no real damage or issues except a happy trunk) and it was my first rim without a single flat.

This year I have noticed a distinct lack of comments about water bars. Were they not an issue this year?

Waterbars Schmaterbars !

Del Sur was graded .... most of the waterbars were SMOOTH.

There were a few on Magic Mountain / Messenger Flats.
(Messenger Flats was still quite rough from the rains)
The Gorman stages were probably the roughest I've ever seen them.

Because the weather didn't allow us to run most of the usual
stages, we did not get to see very many waterbars.
(darn, I miss 'em)

I am VERY GRATEFUL that Paula was able to get a crew together and
was able to work with the forest service to get us the stages we had.
It was obviously a huge amount of work to get them into good enough
shape for us to run them.

I agree. For years we've been hearing about these dreaded waterbars. How they were the scourge of US rally, that they could take a car apart in the blink of an eye. It got so that I was expecting to see furrows in the road. Boy was I dissapointed. The waterbars ranged from a mild rut to healthy jump, but nothing that couldn't be handled. We went over like 5 of them in the recce before we even realized that's what they were. If anything they were a lot of fun! You could get some good air, and pop right into a corner on some of them. Waterbars, hah! Bring em on!

Jake, screw the low water bridge, build a waterbar in your driveway.
