The most recent issue of the Ottawa Valley Triumph Club newsletter "Overdrive" contains some great tales from the days of old. First, an article about Kit Heathcote's rally adventures, an Ottawa resident who drove in many of the classic European rally events, and second, a story by Pat Onions on the Canadian Winter Rally, not your ordinary FIA TSD....

I met Kit a few months back when I presented some Motorsport Club of Ottawa rallying to the Triumph club, and showed the Targa Newfoundland "Party Tape" (12 minute clip produced while competitors were still on the Rock). Kit is a charming man with plenty of fun stories about his time working for Triumph in the UK (he is British).

Here is the link to the newsletter:

Thanks for the link. The stories make for an interesting read.

RE: 1965 Shell 4000
There's a picture (newspaper clipping) of Pat Onions' and Doug McLellan's TR4 on page 3 of this article:

If you know how to get hold of Pat you might want to put him in touch with the unofficial Shell 4000 historian, Marcel Chichak. Marcel still needs more info on the 1965 event in particular.

Bill,

My project is not so unofficial anymore! I'm volunteering for the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame so when this project is done it will be moved to their web site and all of the literature I have acquired in the last 7 years will be donated to the collection. The archive is sending me the Jim Gunn collection so I can put a lid on this can of worms I opened 7 years ago.

I have spokEn to the prez of the Triumph club who will relay a message to Pat Onions with a request for Shell 4000 photographs etc. I'll be sending him a CD with .MPG movies of the '65 to '68 rallies. His TR4 has a cameo appearance in '65 and his Triumph 2000 kinda gets in the way of the camera car, the Don Lamont/Ed Deak Datsun 1600 (damn near gets T-boned), in the '67 movie.

Great news Marcel! Such selfless dedication to the cause has got to be worth a couple of "zeros" at my check point during the next Thunderbird! ;)

RE: Shell 4000 Movies
How can I get a hold of a copy of some of this footage? I am very keen on seeing some period rally action someday. Would you be willing to burn additional CDs for circulation or loan?

Cheers,

Bill
