RE: Rally Mexico (with live results)

It sure has been very quiet around various forums and boards regarding the Corona Rally Mexico. Other than a few posts in the "Mexico" forum at the end of March, no interest really shown. It is also very disappointing that no USA or Canadian team is being represented (and we do have a wealth of talent here and north of the border !). Since this is the 3rd round of the CNAR series and the event is a serious top contender for a WRC date in the future, just seems there would be bigger interest and involvement. I know, I know ... it takes gobs of money, time, more money, more time, with very few "full-time professional rallyists" here and in Canada, yadda, yadda, yadda x( . 3 legs, 22 Special Stages, FIA WRC structured event, no over-seas travel, et al ... yummy :9

Sponsored teams have contracts which specify the rallies they must run. They are not going to spend their own money to run an event 'for fun'. Others are one week from a rally that counts(OT) and two weeks from another rally that counts(RIM). It makes no sense to squeeze another rally in between. The cost, exposure to the possibilty of breaking equipment, and preparation time lost are too great.

I really wanted to find a way to send the StudBug home (New Beetles are built in Mexico after all) so the world's first New Beetle Rally Car could join in the fun with both Mexican variations on that theme, but no one showed the least interest. There's certainly no way I was tackling such an adventure with nothing but a credit card to fund it.

There's a U.S. entry listed: Benham & Rippel in a Golf.

Rovanpera's accum. margins of victory add up to over 4.5 minutes over the first four stages. The second place driver is 4' 54" behind. It would've been nice to see how one of the top American or Canadian drivers would stack up.

RE: Got Tony!

- CRS driver, Californian Tony Chavez, is 3rd in class and 13th overall - Great job!
- Ex-CRS driver Ramkon Ferreyros retired after 2nd stage while running second
- Looks like Rovanpera is winning by 1h...

RE: Got Tony!

If so - too bad...Tony said he has "fully sponsored ride".
- I only saw "Chavez" on the result list and the rallymexico.com doesn't have list of teams and entries ready yet!

Topi:

You may end up being correct! After 18 stages (with 4 more stages remaining), Rovanpera is leading by 48 minutes! The third placed car is 1 hour and 8 minutes behind.

Kind of helps put in perspective how gracious a guest Mr. Blomquist was when he last visited the Maine Forest Rally. I figured there was a perfectly good reason why his winning margin was almost identical to the lead he had after Friday's stages that year.

RE: Harri!!!

- Harri was told "to back off" after first day. No need to upset organizers. Ramon Ferreyros was the only one who could hang on a little. Just wait till next year and compare his times to the same names; It WILL be 2+h to these boys...
- His car was slow, too. After giving press rides in Paris with a factory press car he went to Corsica (drove the same car) and said: "This car has 50HP less than my PRESS car!"
- In late '70 Stig Blomquist came to California and run "La Jornada Trabadosa" and won by 2+ HOURS. The car was Saab 99.

Yes but at least a NA driver won one of the stages (albeit a very short one at the beginning) - I would've loved to see the same driver in the Mexican field in a modern car...

Robin:

Incorrect. Rovanpera won every stage.
