Congrats on finishing the rally, good for you guys. I sure as hell would have tried it. It is "Officially Awesome"...

But, if Mike Hurst approved that he should ask someone to examine his head. As he surely knows windshields are an intergrated structual element, the adhesive used in conjunction with the glass is a safety system, not just a bug/rain/stone deflector.

With all of the RA generated changes in safety specifications and requirements and car build guidelines over these past 5 years, for him to approve it and send you out like that was irresponsible at best.

So why build the cages, use the fuel cells, wear the suits, buy the H&N systems, add the sill bars, follow the rules, when the man in charge lets you run with a now structually deficient shell that will allow intrusion into the cockpit by ...anything... endangering the crew, spectators, and other teams?

This is like me saying my fire suit with all of it's approvals and certifications and testing and such has a big tear in it, can I just wear a long wool coat and my comfy wool pants, I mean they are fireproof right?

They were definitely at transit speed. I went right up to the shoulder to cheer them on! Sweep was probably 100 yards behind them and fellow competitors waited at the FTC to help escort them back to service.

Lucy Block / Chrissie Beavis- Chrissie has always been one of the most driven comptetitors, but Lucy, holy hell! Not only did she help us but she took charge over a few people in strapping our "windshield" to the car. She climbed in and out of the car, all through glass shards, taping and cleaning the glass so we could see. Thank you Lucy, but get a car so you can do every event. You have the rally spirit.

Ben
From what I hear, she also flat towed two cars, one of which all the way back to final MTC. That little VW should be awarded honorary Sweep status after that and it's similar story at Oregon.

Lucy really likes duct tape ;)

First this above was sincere, I would have tried to bs my way to the finish anyway I could. Again good for them.

Secondly, the point is the Safety Guru of RA sanctioned a violation of his own rules, that's the issue.

Aftermarket tint on a rear window is not equal to a windshield installed.

The same people nodding their heads @ their computer screen about Jimmy's comments on safety re:BRS, should stop giving old school props to a flagrent and dangerous violation of safety that was granted.

And why was it granted???? A promise of transit speed? Caught up in the nostalgic feelings of the old POR spirit? The car was a shiny and not an old 86 VW Golf Max-Attacker? Is this why the rule writer chucked his own book? What other rules can I get ignored?

Three final items :
1. No generally available adhesive for windshields cures much less sets in less then 30 minutes, especially in the weather conditions we tend to work in @ service. No windshield is ever installed in service with proper time to cure and should not be allowed out on the stage. But we all wink and nod because duct tape can do anything. This I can accept but the hatch is a farce.

2. If Joe Schmo said it was ok to run I would not have raised much more then an eyebrow and smiled. And I sure don't think Don Taylor here in the NE would let me out on stage, but it was according to the report Mike Hurst, my bitching is not personal, it's the rules/standards hypocrisy and what it could have cost a lot of people.

3. I was 150 yards into a stage once when we shoveled a cantalope sized rock with the skidplate (so just above/at transit speed for reference) it popped up danced on the hood then took off for my drivers face, the windshiled shattered dead in front of him and deformed the laminate a bit then the rock dented the roof and spoiler as it went over. His face and life where saved that quickly, go chuck a nice size rock through some rear hatch glass with aftermarket tint, then go get your rock off the car seat or floor and unwrap it.

I can't see how that's better than no windshield unless you're worried about hail or are following Utecht. But if the regulators allowed it, so be it.

Bah! good on the pirate. As far as I know, There wasn't a service or MTC between the loss of the windscreen and the final stage. No where to technically pull the car from the rally. It was just luck (or not) that Mike was even there. Dillon gets his coefficents doing it the way it's spelled out in the rules, unlike some. They transited the last stage no harm, no foul.

Say a giant squid rippedoff the windscreen 105 feet into the final stage, you would stop and DNF yourself? What about all the other rules that the life on the stage negates? Rock knocks off rear bumper, you stop? Turn signal? You use your fire ex. on someone else's fire, You DNF youself? I thought someone told me rally was dangerous. Driving through Denver at rush hour monday morning was more dangerous that what dillon and the pirate did IMHO.
