Good day,

As organizers of the Four Star Motorsports Black Bear Rally 2005 we're exploring ways to maximize the entry in our event. We're considering a few things for the event, and wondering if they'll make a difference in whether you would compete in the event or not.

First a little background: this year the rally will feature two new stage roads, in addition to the road we've used the past few years. This will bring the total stage mileage up to roughly 100kms, with slightly more than that for transit distance. We will also be providing organizer stage notes for all the stage roads.

The first thing we're considering is a reduced entry fee for seed 4, 5 and 6 drivers. Seeds 4 and 5 would receive a certain reduction, and seed 6 would receive slightly more. We haven't worked out what the numbers would be exactly, but we'd like input on whether you as competitors would be attracted to the event because of this.

The second major thing we're looking at offering is single-pass recce, in addition to the stage notes. This would give teams a chance to drive the stages at slow speeds to check the notes, and gain a measure of experience in how the recce system works as practice for future events. Of course you would have the option of not doing the recce and just use the stage notes, or just use the standard routebook. Our main concern with offering the recce is making the day too long, and potentially forcing competitors to stay for two nights in a hotel. Being a regional event, we're trying to minimize expenses for everyone. The two most likely scenarios would be: friday evening scrutineering, recce saturday morning and rally start around noon, finish around 8:30-9pm; or friday evening and saturday morning scrutineering, rally start around 10-11am, finish at roughly 7pm.

We would appreciate as much input as we can get on these matters, so that we may make decisions that will be best for our competitors.

Thank you.

The increased roads sounds great Ryan! Same with the seed 5 costs!

we are planning to attend... 1st Anniversary edition for us!

The recce pass could be very nice... chance to do personal tweaks, however it will mean needing to bring another vehicle I assume, which may be a hinderance for some. (or we recce in the tow rig again, tools bouncing about...)

Personally, Friday night or Sat Morning Tech are indifferent, We have accom. not too far away. If the one pass recce happened, we probably would show up in Friday to tech?... run recce Sat morn?

Looking forward to it!

Justy has undergone some winter improvements... looking better to boot!

Hi Matt,

In order to minimize costs, and due to the fact that we're using sparsely populated forest roads, we would allow the use of rally cars for the recce. That said, we would also be policing severely (radar, etc) so that nobody tries to use it as a speed testing session. The plan would be scrutineering friday night for those doing recce, recce saturday morning. Or, for those who choose not to do the recce, I'm sure we could arrange scrutineering saturday morning by appointment.

Maximize the miles (I mean kilometers) per dollar - that's what will keep entry levels up.

The recce sounds nice but it's not something that would sway us one way or the other - especially if we have stage notes.

As you note, keeping everything to one day can also help keep competitor costs down. We are always looking for ways to do that. One less night lodging is always a welcome option.

I figure we'll be there regardless - but see the first item. That is always a winner...

I think single-pass recce would be a good addition, and would add that I think it would be vital if you're using hand-written (eg non-Jemba produced) notes.

I would also add that if you plan to provide organizer notes, Jemba notes should be seriously considered.

Friday night tech/registration sounds smart.

Black Bear date - how firm is June 18?

I noticed from the RSO schedule that Black Bear is planned for June 18. Can you tell me how firm this date is? Based on last year's schedule, it should have fallen on June 25 this year. If the 18th is firm - I regret that I will most likely not be available to run.

Naturally, this should have no effect on the rally, the competitors or oganizers. It is simply a disappointment for me (and potentially my teammates).
