Virtually impossible.

The qualifying times don't line up at all if I remember right.

And you'd have to run an openwheel, stock, or unlimited car as bikes run in the morning. You don't come down till half the race is over.

99.99999999% sure its never been done or will be permitted to be done.

EDIT: So I was wrong about it not having happened but it looks like I was right about future possibilities.

having grown up in Manitou Springs and going to the hill climb for as long as I can remember (I'm 42 now),I beleive that this is no longer possible in the rules due to safety concerns.

Leonard Vahsholtz and some others used to do this by flying back down in helicopters. The hill climb rules makers decided that this was to dangerous have so many helicopters flying around. They have a hard enough time lifting off with out extra passengers!

Lurch,

I don't think this has happened before, but I think it can be done. If you race a car in the first split and a bike in the second split this would be easy and everyone would think you were a stud, or nuts whichever you prefer. I thought about running my Rally car and a Stock car last year, but was concerned that I might be DQ'd from Rally for illegal recce.

Depends on whether the event is a rally like last year or just a one-pass hillclimb. If the latter, I think we can get it done. I think I already have a couple of my Motard buddies talked into coming out there with me. What's one more bike in the trailer?

Its all in the run group splits.

If they stay the same bikes run in the same group as the rally based cars so it would be really really really hard to make it happen. If the splits were to chage then it would be theoretically possible.

Eric,

If you want to hear a first hand experience of running up the hill on a bike, talk to Mike Whitman. Since the Escort was not able to make the trip and the entry was already filed, he got the organizers to switch his entry over to the bikes. Actually had a pic around here somewhere.

Yeah, I was stoked to see Mike Whitman listed in the PPIHC spectator program. He was listed in the SCCA rally car class driving an Ecort Cosworth. However, on race day, he was on a bike. I hear he's pretty fast too-not surprising. It would be pretty cool to race on the peak in every class in one's lifetime-now there's a life goal. bikes, quads, sidecars, semi's, sprint, sportsman, stock car, truck, open wheel, unlimited, rally car..........

Sidecar??? Ok, I would have to draw the line on that one. Yup, I do believe that my driver is God, but hanging my a_s off the side of one of those things is a bit beyond my scope of sanity.....

Gives a whole new defination to the term "rail meat"...:+

Pikes Peak rule book states that a competetor can only compete in one division or class. This came about after Vahsholtz and Unser ran in two divisions the same year. From what I had been told the helicoptors were having trouble with the altitude and PPIHC decided that it was unsafe to have the helicopters shuttling drivers down from the top. But now with the split in the middle(didn't have that back then) someone could run in two divisions if the race schedule worked out that way. So If you want to try it, first thing is to get that rule changed, then find out what the schedule is for race day and pick your classes.

Those guys are totaly insane! I was at Glen Cove a few years
back and witnessed those crazy brothers from Sweden pass another team on the outside of the corner next to that rock wall where it changes from tarmac to dirt. They were exceeding 85 MPH and the side car riders were kicking at each other the whole time. Those guys have B****

>sidecars

Scott Whitney gave me a ride in the Whitney Harley V-Rod sidecar at Pikes Peak 2003. Basically from the start line down to the visitors' center and back. I don't think we ever exceeded 50mph, but it was still a hell of a ride.

I'm in awe of the sidehacks.

Well, just saw the entry list for Pike's Peak Winter Hillclimb this upcoming February. 63 entries in the studded-tire sidecar class and 29 semi's. Good to hear that all rally cars are required to run on Methanol without restrictors on studded tires! Juha Kankunen is hoping for a new record in his unlimited class 1,300 hp HKS built 22B STi. Should be a fun one!

If I were king.

I really wanted to try a side hack in my younger days. I wasn't good enough as a pilot but had a powerful grip and well developed proprioception (spelling) but could not find a ride. It would take a lot of cows to cover me in leather now, and I don't bounce so well anymore.
For a chance to run the Peak I might still try being the monkey.

stage roads on 2 and 4 wheels.

Years ago I had a similar converstion with a buddy who snowmobiles. We were on our way to the campsite from canoeing and saw the snowmobile trail markers in the trees, and realized that he and I both used the same roads. We gave each other a 10 on the 1 to 10 craziness scale. I said that I had a cage and 4 point belts - he countered that he could just roll off his sled.

Side hacks at PP - about a 15.
