FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OLYMPUS IS BACK!

Former WRC rally to run as 2006 United States Rally Championship event Shelton, WA (July 26, 2005) - Massimo "Miki" Biasion was the last competitor to take the podium in this event, besting teammate Alex Fiorio, both driving Lancia Delta Integrales. American John Buffum completed the podium in his Audi Coupe Quattro. Winners in previous years included rally legends Markku Alen and Juha Kankkunen, aka the "Flying Finns". The Olympus Rally played host to the infamous Group B cars, and now it is back after a 14 year hiatus.

Scheduled for May 19-20, 2006 as the fourth round of the United States Rally Championship, the Olympus International Rally will run many of the same roads as in its previous iterations. It will also be a Federation Internationale de L'Automobile (FIA) calendar listed event through the United States Auto Club (USAC), bringing back the international flavor that has made the event part of American and World rally history.

"We are very excited to be returning this event to both the national and international stage," stated Steve McQuaid, Chairman of the rally, "it's nice to bring the event out with a bang at this level of competition and organization."

"We like to think that we have the best rally roads in the United States, if not the world," added McQuaid, "and we're looking forward to hosting the best competitors the United States and the world has to offer on them."

The United States Rally Championship, America's premier rally championship, consists of Federation Internationale de L'Automobile (FIA) internationally listed events sanctioned by United States Auto Club (USAC) and presented by the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). More information on the Championship is available at the series website at www.usrallychampionship.com. More information on USAC is available at www.usacracing.com and on NASA at www.nasarallysport.com.

May I ask why you wouldn't do 2 pass recce?

Is this 1 pass with jemba or some other organiser prepared notes?

This event is one we would very likely consider winning ... er ... entering ... and recce vs. Org. Prepared would likely sway our decision.

I truly hope that there will be a tarmac stage at Golden gardens park in Seattle, A very fast short stage up a great hill. If not there, something really cool in the city on Friday night.

Good answer ... biggest problem now is that you are only 1 week ahead of the Rocky Mountain Rally in the Canadian Rally Championship - which WILL be in our plans.

Kieth asked:
>so ... being FIA listed, does that mean it will be a proper
>full recce event and not a jemba/1 pass event?

No. It's one of eight rallies in the NASA championship, and several are FIA listed, and each organizer still has a lot of decisions that they control on issues like recce.

Cheers,
Anders

Yes we are working on several tributes to John during the weekend. Also working on a reunion of past Olympus workers and contestants.I wish we could have put this together a year earlier so John could see his rally come back to life....Steve

FAN-TASTIC!
As a former Media Centre Worker, at previous four events, except the final one, I would be planning to attend. However, as Keith said, it is one week before NARC (likely!) Rocky Mountain Rally and one week after Rim of the World. Any chance of changing it for support of CARS-based competitors? Is John Forespring going to be involved? Good to see his smiling face again! What about Claudia Chittim, Garry Fox, Mike and Jan Halliday, among others?

Rim is moving a week earlier; it will be the weekend after Oregon Trail. So in the space of five weeks you will have Oregon Trail, Rim, break, Olympus, then Rocky (although wouldn't there be a weekend between Olympus and Rocky?). So maybe it's four events in six weeks.

Hello!

That's awesome news. Any info on where the vast majority of the stages will be held? Will there be stages outside of Aberdeen (aka Brooklyn Tavern? Will the event be based in Seattle?

Any info will be much appreciated!!

Everything is in the early stages right now but I can give you a little hint on whats planned at this time.

Saturday stages- Around the ORV park and Summit Lake area west of Olympia
Sundays stages- Matlock Lake Nahwatzel area
Lots of fun and reminiscing with old and new rally freinds :)

Thanks for the info! One more question. I've attended several Wild West rallies with those stages. Did the Olympus use roughly the same roads as Wild West? How did these events differ?

I already can't wait!! Sounds great!!

When we did Olympus in the 80s we used Capital Forrest and a lot of Weyco roads all the way down to Raymond. Those roads are not avaliable to use now.The roads we can use are around Shelton McCleary Matlock area some new some old favorites. Like Lake Nahwatzel stage 24+ miles we can configure that stage about a dozen differant ways. :)

Hi Steve:

My name is Lisa Chittim, John's step daughter.

I have signed up to volunteer at Olympus, but I would love to be involved with any tribute.

I don't think my mother is going to be able to attend, she is putting on a wine festival in NM.

I am hoping my sister, Karryn, will be there.......

But myself and John's granddaughter, Heather, will be there.

my email is [email protected], please let me know what I can do!!!!!!!!!
