Coworker just bought a 98 Toyota 4Runner. Every time he starts out, at about 3-5 mph there is a strange vibration type of noise. The dealer (a Toyota dealer) is telling him that it's normal, it's the ABS testing itself each time you start driving. Is he pulling his leg? Thanks.

some abs systems DO cycle after the vehicle has been started. The dealer may or may not be pulling a fast one. Ask your buddy to step on the pedal (hard) when this is happening. If the pedal vibrates, then it is, in fact, the abs doing a self test. This should only happen once, right after the vehicle is started up...
