Spent the past couple weeks installing and testing racecar telemetry units in NASCAR cars. Lucky for me that the testing included getting to ride shotgun in the cars to monitor the systems in use. Not as cool as rally but the roundy-round racing won more respect in my mind than it had previously or TV viewing of it can show.
Now if only special stages had a couple extremely banked high speed curves, rally would have the best of both worlds.

Having driven Taladega at speed (in a Saab 900 while helping Saab to set several world speed records), I have to agree that racing on the high banks is a completely different sensation from what one might guess. The g-forces try to pull your body straight down to the floor of the car, and you find yourself bracing yourself against the floor with your right foot, which is planted firmly on the accelerator pedal.

And those paved race tracks are NOT smooth. There are plenty of bumps and dips that cause the car to bounce all over the place.
