Molson joins stellar Targa Newfoundland rally sponsor list

ST. JOHN'S -- Molson, North America's oldest beer brand, has teamed up with the continent's newest motorsport event in a sponsorship agreement that will see Molson Canadian beer as an official sponsor of the 2002 Targa Newfoundland international rally for historic, classic and modern sporting cars.

The agreement, between Molson and Targa organizer Newfoundland International Motorsports, will make the nationally popular Molson Canadian brand the official beer of the event and add to the festivities at the many activities scheduled for the busy Sept. 13-22 dates of the rally.

Targa Newfoundland joins prestigious events such as the Molson Indy Vancouver and Molson Indy Toronto and other top motorsports events under the Molson banner for 2002.

"It was a natural fit for Molson," says Dan Crummell, regional executive for Molson in St. John's. "Targa Newfoundland fits the profile of the kind of events we like to be associated with. It is a quality event with wide appeal for fans, and it puts something back into the community here."

"Targa Newfoundland is much more than an exciting rally for great sports cars of all ages," says rally organizer Robert Giannou. "It's also a community festival, a chance for us to bring a little international excitement to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, and a chance for international competitors to experience some of the best of Newfoundland."

In addition to gala events at the start and finish of the rally in St. John's, towns and villages along the route are planning their own festivals to greet the rally, Giannou explains, and the overnight stops in Clarenville and Gander promise to roll out the red carpet. Community groups along the way will benefit financially by providing meals, services and facilities to the rally.

Targa Newfoundland is a unique motorsports event in North America. Patterned after the highly successful Targa-style events in places like Australia and New Zealand, the event is designed to provide the owners of historic, classic and modern sporting cars the opportunity to drive them in the manner they were intended to be driven.

The Targa Newfoundland rally combines a test of driving skill on closed road sections, called Targa Stages, with leisurely touring through scenic countryside at legal speeds (called Touring Stages). Scoring on the Targa Stages will decide the competition, including overall winner and class winners. Cars will be classified by age, engine size and level of modification. A separate competition, called Newfoundland Trials, will be run at the same time, at regular speeds over the same roads, and will cater to owners more interested in taking in the scenery than high-level competition.

The Targa Newfoundland route takes in areas of the Burin, Bonavista and Avalon peninsulas in eastern and central Newfoundland. The route covers 2,300 kilometres, including more than 500 kilometres of Targa stages.

Targa Newfoundland is organized by Newfoundland International Motorsports and sanctioned by the Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS).
