And that's about a decade and a half since a certain man named Carlsson took a mighty 850cc Saab 95 to Monte Carlo:
1961 Erik Carlsson enters for the Monte Carlo Rally in a Saab 95 -- the factory's only four-speed car. Finishes in fourth place. ( I believe he was first in Gp1, equivalent of the original GpN)

1962 Erik Carlsson and Gunnar Häggbom win overall in the Monte Carlo Rally. The starting number of the winning car is 303.

1963 Erik Carlsson wins the Monte Carlo Rally for the second time, now with Gunnar Palm as his co-driver. Starting number this year is 283, Erik Carlsson and Gunnar Palm come second in the Spa-Sofia-Liege "Marathon de la Route", one of the most demanding rallies.

Saab actually _entered_ the highest level rally in the World with theirs

The motors were built by a crazy young guy working in the cometition department named Bengt-Erik Ström, the Smokey Yunnick of the Saab world, a real character who has drunk me under the table more than a few times.
He's still in the business and still likes his liquor, and still loves those 2 strokes.

Actually SAAB had the GT 750 with a 4spd at that time but homologation numbers were low-the rules that year favored higher production number cars (handicap system)-so SAAB ran the 95 which was of higher production numbers and had the all essential 4spd transmission.
Erik and his SAAB were actually leading the event even though he had finished one speed stage with three flat tires! The organisers decided that it would be a good idea during the running of the event to place handicap on all cars with 2-stroke engines thus lowering the finishing postition of Erik and his SAAB to 4th-behind the French cars!!
