Would someone, please, fill me in on what happened to Lageman & Williams at STPR 2005? I worked rally communications, but can't remember hearing anything about them. Then again, with all the bizarre radio problems we battled this year, that should probably not be suprising!

The results postings list no time for SS1, so I am assuming they broke or crashed...

I was greatly looking forward to seeing them drive a spirited race, and also looking forward to seeing and hearing Carl Merrill's buzzbomb -- BUMMER! ;(

The information I received was the the engine blew or lost oil and compression at the start of stage 4. Someone probably has more specific information from after they brought it home.

If a team doesn't turn in their score card their stage times are not calculated.

Thanks for the information, Peter!!!

Now that I think about it, I saw them at the start of SS2 where we were working... I would have liked to have known their stage times for 1 thru 4, but if you breakdown, as you indicated, I can see where their dismay might keep them from turning in their card.

As I remember they were pretty much "in sequence" after SS1, so I assume that they were moving along nicely - at least initially!

Thanks again!

BTW -- With all that the rally community has been through in the last couple of years (the tragedies at Sawmill & Oregon Trails rallies, SCCA pull-out, new sanctioning bodies, etc.), I would not have been surprised to have a "sub-par" STPR. Frankly, with all the internal STPR-specific changes and struggles, I expected a COUPLE of "sub-par" years...

Yet, as many of the posts have indicated, this was an EXTRAORDINARY STPR!!! Almost all of the new changes turned out to be BIG plusses, HIGH, HIGH levels of competition, unbelievably low attrition rate - at least through SS6, no rain for a change! :p The atmosphere at registration was very positive with RA's involvement - they were very approachable, friendly, helpful, etc. The after-rally event at the airport was awesome -- the crowd, the energy, the field lights, the food, many great reports!!! Many thanks to all that contributed, and especially those of you who are in it VERY DEEPLY with all the planning, the travel, the hours, the tough decisions to make!!!

Merril's escort blowing a turbo? No way! :) Seems like every time I ever saw Carl in that thing, it was shooting out four foot anti-lag flames, or trailing huge clouds of blue smoke. Awesome, but tempermental.

Dave,

From the start of the rally, we were very low on power, and we weren't able to diagnose the problem at the first service. In the middle of SS3, we lost boost completely. We finished the stage and did a quick check over of the car, but not wanting to risk a very expensive motor, we decided to call it a day. It turns out we had a boost leak on a pipe which could not be seen when it was installed in the car. The leak probably caused the turbo to overspeed and expire.

Sorry we couldn't put on a show for you and everyone else looking forward to seeing the Escort in action, though we hope to be back, at full power, in Maine...

Drop an American V8 (iron or aluminum) in it. It will be more than "awesome", and not at all temperamental.

I can't understand all the fascination with these over-dosed econo-boxes.

Thanks to ALL for the info!!!! (and for taking the effort to reply!!!!)

Ramana --

Best wishes for the season, and I hope I did not appear to be making too much of the car -- and not seeming to be appreciative of your talent.

Sorry.

In 2003 a friend helped to sponsor your efforts at STPR - Ken Cole at RallyPerformance - after that I followed your efforts closely. Congratulations on all that you have been able to accomplish.

Good luck for the future!
