Dear all,

Are hydraulic handbrakes worth the effort or as a beginner would the OEM handbrake be suitable?

Anny feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you all,

Fill out your location information in your user profile - it'll make it easier for folks to guess what events you'll do, or suggest people for you to speak with locally.

We ran 3 events before messing with the handbrake on our Jetta.

Plenty of other stuff to worry about, generally.

That said, there are some "off the shelf" setups that are trivial to work worth, depending on how the brake lines in the car are already run.

We need to know what car you have, some stock handbrakes are not usable at all, 'specially the types that have small separate shoes inside the rotors; these can just tear loose if applied at speed. And generally, any cable type is quite questionable and generally marginal as to how well they will work. You need to go with a hydraulic type for consistent action and non-gorilla level of arm strength required; cable handbrakes usually are pretty sucky for this.

That being said, if you are new to racing overall, there are others things to worry about before a handbrake, like a reliable car.

Good luck and welcome!
