I had no idea that Hans Blix, current head of the UN's weapons inspection program in Iraq, is, in fact, the coolest guy ever:

Diplomat and rally driver? Where do I sign up?

Does anybody on this forum know this guy? That's an SCCA logo on his Volvo there, so presumably he's been living in the states at some point recently. I'd love to hear any Hans Blix anecdotes, if you've got 'em!

He won a Gold Medal at the 1960 Rome olympics in Archery too...

The photos are a trip; that's an SCCA road racing sticker.
I like the Swedish Street Rods jacket, though!!

Hans Blix started his rally driving career in 1976 with Saab 96

Until 1983 Hans competed only in Swedish rallies. His first international rally was the Lombard RAC Rally in 1984 in which he finished 3rd overall. In 1990, he became a Mitsubishi Works-driver. He won the1991 Swedish Rally and Baja Aragon, generally showed himself to be a top level rally driver. In addition to this, he was one of the team that tested and developed the new Lancer Evolution in 1992. This experience paid off handsomely when he won the two events of the 1994 Asia-Pacific Rally Championship, and 1995 Swedish Rally, Rally Australia and Rally of Malaysia within .

Top Placement:

1984 Series 3rd in the Swedish Rally Championship
1995 Series Champion for the Swedish Rally Championship (7 wins)
1986 Series Champion for World Rally Championship
1987 1st overall in the Ivory Coast Rally
2nd overall in the Rally of New Zealand
1988 4th overall in the Safari Rally
1989 2nd overall in the Rally Australia
4th overall in the 1000 Lakes Rally
4th overall in the RAC Rally
2nd overall in the Australia and the RAC Rally
1993 4th overall in the Monte Carlo Rally
2nd overall in the RAC Rally
1994 5th overall in the Monte Carlo Rally
1995 1st overall in the Swedish Rally
1st overall in the Rally of Hong Kong

This guy's very confused :(.

1986 Series Champion for World Rally Championship
-- No,that was Juha Kankkunen

1987 1st overall in the Ivory Coast Rally
-- No, that was Kenneth Eriksson / Diekmann in a VW Golf GTI 16V
2nd overall in the Rally of New Zealand
-- No, that was Whittmann / Pattermann in a Lancia Delta Integrale

1988 4th overall in the Safari Rally
--Not exactly.. Eriksson and Diekmann were 4th overall in a Toyota Supra Turbo.

1989 2nd overall in the Rally Australia
-- Eriksson / Parmander in a Celica GT4
4th overall in the 1000 Lakes Rally
-- Same...
4th overall in the RAC Rally
-- Same...
2nd overall in the Australia and the RAC Rally
-- He just contradicted himself. Second in RAC was Sainz/moya in a GT4.

1993 4th overall in the Monte Carlo Rally
-- No. That would be Eriksson and Parmander again in a Lancer.
2nd overall in the RAC Rally
-- Eriksson / Parmander

1994 5th overall in the Monte Carlo Rally
-- Ditto
1995 1st overall in the Swedish Rally
-- Natch

I wish...

By the way, Kenneth Eriksson's first rally car was a Saab 96.

I just cut and pasted that info off the website but Your right, I could not even find Blix's name mentioned in the top 5 of any World Championship rally, I wonder where this guy is getting this information. Maybe Blix is an impersonator, not really a UN arms inspector either

So are we to understand the whole thing is a joke, then? The finishes are just nonsense? If so, does anyone recognize that Volvo car as somebody else's car altogether, with some photoshopping?

1. Of course it's a joke.

What do you mean of course it's a joke? It is a pretty convincing website, why go through all that trouble to create a site like that? and why make him a rally hero, why not a Squash champion? Bizzaro!

With tongue firmly in cheek:

Well, Morgan, of course it's because rally is the sport du jour. It's what everyone wants to be known for! The promotion efforts must be paying off! ;-)

For the further education of our gentle readers I highly recomend any time you go to a site to look at the root URL in this case:

http://www.cockeyed.com/

Now if the root had been something like www.UN.org well then... but a name like cockeyed does not inspire confidance in the source.

Except it is someones personal Hans Blix fan club site, so of course it would not have an official UN url. None the less, I still fell for it, but it is Isaac's fault!

By the way, there's some hilarious stuff on that cockeyed.com site. It's chock full of pranks, actually. Very amusing.

-Isaac

p.s. I still like Hans Blix. And he SHOULD drive a Volvo with his name on the side, clearly.
