Mostly directed to Old Farts:
Are there any intact pre-1972 rally cars around which could be fairly quickly brought into compliance with modern safety standards and used as rentals for potential H Class competitors?
My own selfish reason: We need more H Class competitors in Salem next month. Byford (2002), Cook (510), Wheeler (MGBGT) have all indicated they won't be able to attend. I've not yet heard from Colin (Cortina)....and I'm guessing Ben (Cortina) isn't ready yet. The other couple of known vintage and potential H Class cars out there...I've not heard any status reports for quite awhile. On the other hand, I have had several people email who are in the process of building or interested. Maybe an available rental ride would help light this fire.

Yeah, I'd like to see a field like this in the US one day. This is from recent Arctic Rally, Finland.
- Note: All these cars must have a real rally history. I don't like the rule, it's sad to see 3-4 cars per rally being totaled, soon there's only Wartburgs left (too slow to hurt itself). FIA doesn't allow cars without an actual rally history.
- US Historic cars: I just sold mine ('71 Volvo 142S)to a collector (!) who'll never rally nor race it. A pitty but only him paid the price - $$ talks...
- Maybe it's time to relax the rules and allow "20-years old or older" into Historic? These cars can take more abuse and are easier to fix.
- The reason I didn't plan to rally is we only have TWO rallies left in California (very rough RIM and short Gorman) - not worth the hassle and expense. If I was living in WA or OR I'd be rallying, though.
- To build an inexpensive rental is not a problem. Find renters, I'll build as many as you want. Volvos, Fords, VWs, Mazdas, Toyotas, even Porsches are plenty and cheap!

PS. Ever seen an Isuzu Bellett GTR? What a beautiful car! It has 1600cc TwinCam engine, too. There was a big and very successful Finnish works team and these cars are still around. From there on Isuzu's design went down like the company.

My guess is that all you will find are old Datsun 510(s).

Pre-72 is tough.

Once you hit '73, however, there could be a bunch of Mazda RX-3(s), etc.

Time to allow '20-years old or older' (cars) into Historic...

I, a Non-Old Fart, have a '73 w/ a (in)famous rally history that's age-non-compliant w/the current Historic rules. I'd be racing Historic (if I could) in the MidWest, SE, & East.

As I read/interpret, there's enough restrictions to keep out the Stratoseses, 037s, Ur-Quattros, etc, even if they are age compliant.

Once I get my act together, my intent is to write the PRD, PRB, & regional directors to request an age rule change.

Anyone joining me?

I might be able to make the Volvo available.

I'd love to run 100AW, but don't have the funds to do so as of yet.

It's a 'new' rally car, by the way. You can watch incar from its debut ClubRally event on realautosport.com. Check out MadMike's thread in the USA forum.

Paul,

I like this idea. Let's see...if every Region has 1 or 2 shops with a few Vintage Rental Cars available. They might be able to supplement their general business and promote Vintage Rallying at the same time.

Do you think any Competitor's might want to travel the National Series "sans-auto" and rent a fully supported Vintage Car at each event? The variety alone would be Great fun, and the travel costs could be very low. Heck the price of a local support crew is probably lower than event towing in many cases.

My Cortina won't be at 100AW (too far from Seattle!) I am doing the WSRC series though (western states club rallies).

I think the big secret to making historic bigger are two issues:
1) convincing G2/G5 cars that are historic eligible to move across
2) creating a post historic class

Glenn,

issue #1 is already dealt with, I think... all H class cars must be g2 or g5 compliant. And any pre-72 g2/g5 car prepped in a fashion consistent with its contemporary rally history is basically H Class compliant.

issue #2 is another game altogether; my interests are in the lawn-mower technology of the pre-72 cars, so I have a dedicated interest in keeping H Class with that age limit...and as such, adding another post-historic class neither dilutes nor augments what I perceive to be the basic interest of H Class.

Regarding rentals, I think it's a great idea. Could a shop charge enough to make it worthwhile, though?

Nope, my Cortina isn't going to be ready any time soon. Still just sitting there...
