"Today, we did some demonstration stages. We did fine, but Mark William's newly finished Ford Falcon ended up on its side is presently in a body shop getting fixed to be back in the race tomorrow."

Didn't anybody tell Tom NOT to slide those skinny tires on pavement? ;)

Actually they weren't skinny tires. But I don't think they were up to temperature. The final turn was sort of an odd combination of curves, with curbing on both sides. The car didn't go on its side, but did go up on two wheels. With the help of the local Ford fanatics, parts were located, including a sandblaster at 11:00 PM on a Sunday night, so the Falcon was ready to go for Tuesday's start.

RE: McGeer's slide

Well, the main theories I've heard, which I agree with, is that Tom likely drove the (square) right handed corner as if in an AWD car. When the power was applied it all went to the rear wheels, they just slid more, and the back got real happy, and the front stuck. Also, when was the last time Tom drove a car agressively (as if in competition) where there were street curbs present? This was a street course. And, when was the last time Tom drove a powerful RWD auto, competitively? (not that I know the answer, but I can hazard a guess). Remember, this was on the Demonstration Day, so he might also have been getting used to the car. Re tires, I think this happened near the end of the session. Tires may not have been hot, but not cold. It was a lovely sunny day, too. After the rear axle replacement, he seemed to be doing just fine!

Charlevoix 1999 (the last year with tarmac stages), and possibly more recently (Maine?).

Somewhere around 1990? would be my guess (RX-7, I think).
