Sweet!

Ever since NASA Rally Sport did a winter rally with "regular" studs (5mm limit) back in 2009 I've been waiting for someone to go all the way and take it to the next level! And it's super cool that you've done all the legwork and found suppliers for the tires and spec'd them out. Nice. :)

I demand awesome pictures! *grin*

The Quebec Rallye Championship is gonna be amazing in the snow!

As it currently sits, regional events are allowed to run street studs if they are legal per the provincial DOT or equivalent and its approved by CARS.

However there is a proposal for revision pertaining to National level rallies.

From announcement 2015-11 on carsrally.com

"Rule change proposal for Rally Community feedback

Rule change rationale:

The technical rules committee has reviewed three separate rule change proposals requesting that DOT tire studs be allowed for use in CARS sanctioned National events in regions which permit the use of street studded tires during the time period in which the event is run. Based on the Technical Rules Committee recommendation the CARS BOD has approved the following rule change for a two-week review. The rule change if adopted will be in place for the start of the 2016 competition season.
Rule Change:

12.4.3 Tire studs

Old wording: 'Studs or other hard material devices inserted into a tire not permitted except as follows:
At regional events, taking place in a province which permit studded tires for street use, the CARS region which sanctions the event may allow the use of street-legal studded tires. For dual status events, competitors entering the national portion of the event are still not permitted to use studded tires even if they are also entered in the regional portion.'

Proposed change : 'Studded tires are permitted at winter events in jurisdictions that permit the use of studded tires if so defined in the event supplementary regulations. In events that comprise of a National event and a Regional event concurrently, the supplementary regulations are to define the usage of studs for each event.

Intent.

The intent of allowing competition vehicles to be fitted with studded tires is to allow teams to use street type winter tires that are fitted with standard, regular street type passenger vehicle studs, in order to provide an enhanced level of grip in certain conditions at a reasonable cost to the team.

Studded tires may be used on the CRC winter events with the following limitations:
Studs must protrude no more than 3.5mm from the tread face, and meet TSMI specifications for size 12,13,14 or 15. Stud construction shall have a single base flange, a cylindrical body, and carbide tip with maximum diameter of 2.5mm.
Nokian Eco Studs 8 are allowed but must also protrude no more than 3.5 mm from the tread face.
The studs must be mounted in DOT tires that are designated by the manufacturer as studdable and are produced with moulded holes for the purpose of stud retention.
There must be a maximum of 130 studs per tire, regardless of tire size
Homemade, competition, specialty, off road or custom studs are not permitted.
Studs are permitted in all classes.

The CARS BOD would like to receive your feedback no later than January 4, 2016. Based on this feedback the CARS BOD will issue a rule change notification by BULLETIN by the start of the 2016 competition season.

The Canadien Association of RallySport ‘CARS’ announcement 2015-11 is for sanctioned Canadien Rally National events championship CRC. This is good for team running national event, it will be the first time that CRC’s event will run on DOT studded tire. Championnat Rallye Québec CRQ is using DOT studded Tire for winter event for the past 12 years (also supported by CARS).
