Sainz retires
21 Oct, 12:43

Carlos Sainz, the winner of a record 26 World Championship rallies, has announced that he will retire at the end of the season.

The 42-year-old Spaniard, who was World Champion in 1990 and 1992, has decided that he would prefer to spend more time with his family and has therefore turned down an offer to remain with Citroen.

?I have been 16 years driving in the World Championship. I think it has been pretty good the last two years - I think I have achieve not so bad. What has moved me is the 16 rallies: with the rallies and all the testing, it has been very difficult this year,? Sainz said.

Sainz has spent longer at the top of the sport than other driver in the sport?s history. He gained his reputation driving for the Spanish Renault importer, then joined Ford, before moving to Toyota and winning his two world titles. He has since driven for Subaru, Ford and Citroen, gaining a reputation as a fine test driver.

He is also one of the sport?s great all-rounders, having won events as different as the Monte Carlo, 1000 Lakes and Safari Rallies.

Very true. He's a class act. I'm glad I got to meet him at Acropolis and even happier to have had my picture taken with him to show Mad Mike (who said I wouldn't be able to get within 50 feet of him.)

Sadly Carlos will not be able to do Australia due to a recce accident. This would have been his last rally ever. However instead his last was a few weeks ago in Spain, where he scored a podium. In fact this season he has been on the podium 8 of the 16 events including victory in Argentina. Not a bad way to end a year let alone career!

Man Carlos could totally get on TV doing Cialis or Enzyte comercials during soccer games. That dude has more old man stud in him than Sean Connery.
