The local PBS station is rerunning Horatio's Drive ( http://www.pbs.org/horatio/ ) this week, the story of the first transcontinental auto trip, in a 1903 Winton.

Check your local PBS listings, as they may be playing this also.

It's well worth watching, from both historical and automotive viewpoints.

And some of the roads that they used (which still exist) look like they could support a pretty cool rally in the west.

Dog gone it. I missed the first 1/2 hour of it. If anyboy sees it on the schedule again, please post it here.

BTW, anybody familiar with Sid Dickson? Several years ago he was looking for a route across the USA of completely unpaved roads. I wonder if he ever finished the project?

There is a dual-sport motorcyle guy that has done this. His route is only 2% paved. Here's the website:
