Ok, so my friend is throwing a little pre-wedding party, and sez, "Dennis, bring out the rally car, pleeeeaaassseee." Ok, what the heck. It would be nice to get it out,and maybe I'll pick up a potential sponsor so something. Well, did ya ever notice that you can't drive a rally car without fixing something first? So after changing a soft tire, putting a seat in, and dumping in about 5 gallons of race gas, I found myself about a half our late. No problem, its all back roads to her house, and I have a rally car, so off I go. About two miles later I spot a sherrif on the corner, but he's facing the other way, and I putter by him. Thinking that was THE COP in the area, I crank it up to about 75 to make some time. Well, as you can probably guess, only two miles later, tucked behind a SUV is a State Patrol officer, in the middle of nowhere. Busted, Doh!! Now it's decision time. Do I make a run for it (she's going the other way, and didn't get a good look at me), or do I stop. It's tempting, as the cruiser is no match for the rally prepped Eclipse on a country road, and I'm only a few miles from home. In the end discretion wins out, and I pull off. A very attractive young female trooper gets out, walks up wide eyed too my stickered up and rumbling open class car (with personalized license plate "GOFASTR" no less), and rhetorically asks me why I was doing 73 mph in a 55 zone.

So, here's the question of the day. What on Earth do I say to this trooper???? DO I try and weasel out of it, or knowing full well I'm gonna get the ticket anyway do I spout of some witty remark? Do I hit on her (she's cute)?

FYI, I said neither, instead mumbling something about "I uh, um, ah, guess it kinda got away from me a bit, um, ah, doh!" And yes, I got the ticket.

Ps. I know speeding in stickered rally car is bad, dangerous, gives the sport a bad name, etc..... blah, blah, blah. So save the preaching. The $151 fine has taught me my lesson for today.

73/55 isn't so bad...... Heck, I am sure that plenty of us on the forums have done faster in our street cars. Except me, of course.

I have not had the misfortune to be in a traffic stop in my rally car - it pays to know the troopers in the area.

I did get a nice looonnnnngggggg look from a town cop while driving to work in my rally car with a shirt and tie on.

We sell the Ford Crown Vic Interceptors to all the law enforcement around here... THAT'S WHY I'VE GOT A DEALER PLATE ON MY DEMO! Those cars haul, once they hit 70, it's all 8 of those cylinders churning and before you know it, "Hey Cutie!" But still no match for the rally car on tera firma.

$151.00, Hmmm, let's see, at this rate if you keep doing this a few more times you might get your sponser sticker on the patrol cars!:7

I've been stopped twice in the past 8 months in the rally car. Once on the way to an autoX, 60/45 and once at 3am in January while practicing in the snow.......never should have slowed for that one..."Sir I understand snow is dangerous but I have proper snow tires and wasn't speeding" ...

I may as well have been singing a song, he wasn't hearing anything I said.

See ya'll at STPR!

Coincidently, I got this in an email today...

THINGS TO NEVER SAY TO A COP...

1. I can't reach my license unless you hold my beer.

2. Sorry, Officer, I didn't realize my radar detector wasn't plugged in.

3.Aren't you the guy from the Village People?

4. Hey, you must've been doin' about 125 mph to keep up with me. Good job!

5. Are You Andy or Barney?

6. I thought you had to be in relatively good physical condition to be a police officer.

7. You're not gonna check the trunk, are you?

8. I pay your salary!

9. Gee, Officer! That's terrific. The last officer only gave me a warning, too!

10. Do you know why you pulled me over? Okay, just so one of us does.

11. I was trying to keep up with traffic. Yes, I know there are no other cars around. That's how far ahead of me they are.

12. When the Officer says "Gee Son....Your eyes look red, have you been drinking?" You probably shouldn't respond with,"Gee Officer your eyes look glazed, have you been eating doughnuts?"

I just got through representing a driver here, same car (talclipse) who got a 66 in a 45. In Tennessee, this is Reckless Driving territory (more than 20 over). He'll be going to traffic school, which will knock 15 miles an hour off of the moving violation, and then it will be up to the DA as to whether they will dismiss the 6 miles over ticket.

Interestingly, he tried to use the "just following traffic excuse," but there were no cars within about a mile. x(

Moral: Stickers attract police officers. Pre-plan your story. I would've said that I was late to a wedding.

>Did you imply in the classifieds that the State Patrol is
>making you sell the car?

The State Patrol is not making me sell my car. It is street legal (she actually made me do a light/blinker/horn check) and they know it. The ticket is just one more bill to throw on the heap that will all get paid off when I sell that car. Besides, I don't feel like getting blamed and having to provide my whereabouts everytime some idiot in a black sport compact does a burnout somewhere.

I got one last summer on Woodward Ave. in Royal Oak north of Detroit. One week after the Woodward Dream Cruise. I left a party with the rally car and my buddy who just bought a Neon R/T left at the same time. We came upon a stoplight at the same time. What do you think is gonna happen?!*

2 cops. Both got tickets. I had to go to traffic school. The instructor's eyes got real big when he asked me what I do and I said I was a race car driver.
