Targa Newfoundland to honour BMW racing history in 2004

ST. JOHN'S - The storied racing history of BMW will be celebrated as part of the Targa Newfoundland international rally when the German carmaker is the Honoured Marque of the 2004 rally for historic, classic and modern sporting cars, event organizers have announced.

"From its achievements in modern Formula One racing to its roots in European motorcycle and sedan racing, the name BMW is synonymous with motorsports at the highest level," said Robert Giannou, organizer of the 2004 Targa Newfoundland. "We are declaring 2004 a year of celebration of BMW's past, present and future commitment to competition."

In addition to a special tribute to BMW cars at the event, organizers will offer a discounted entry to individuals entering BMWs, Giannou said. "We invite the BMW clubs, the BMW owners and competitors, and the fans of the marque to come and celebrate with us," said Giannou. The discounts apply to the 'Early Bird' and regular entry fees for both Targa and Touring classes.

The winner of the Classic division of the 2003 Targa event and the team with the lowest overall score was California's Bill Arnold and Peter Guagentia in a BMW Bavaria. Three BMWs were entered in the event, along with three new MINI models (MINI is a brand of the BMW group).

"There are so many companies with wonderful sporting histories and it's important to recognize them in an event that is both modern and traditional," added Giannou. "BMW is recognized around the world for its commitment to building cars that drivers truly enjoy and, as fans and organizers, we applaud them."

The 2003 Targa Newfoundland event attracted nearly 60 teams from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, Holland and the Bahamas, as well as from the U.S. and Canada, and has generated international publicity and tourism revenue for Newfoundland.

Patterned after the successful Targa Tasmania (Australia) and Targa New Zealand events, Targa Newfoundland was created to provide the owners of historic, classic and modern sporting cars the opportunity to drive them the way they were intended to be driven, safely and in the spirit of goodwill and good competition.

The 2004 version of Targa Newfoundland will again be a six-day, 2,000-plus kilometre automobile adventure for the owners of historic, classic and modern sporting cars from around the world. This year's event will start and finish in St. John's and run September 11 through September 19.

Targa Newfoundland is owned and organized by Newfoundland International Motorsports and is sanctioned by the Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS).
