This board has been getting a bit heavy lately with talk of environmental issues, restricters, etc.... So I thought I'd try and lighten it up with something fun. Here goes:

Who is currently running the most powerful car in North American rally racing?

(I'll guess Mike Hurst's mustang, but I've heard rumors of 500hp Volvos out west)

How about by class?

(Open-the Doug Havirmobile, Gr5-Hurstang, GrN-Prodrive WRX, PGT-Verdier's cheater WRX }>, G2-Fuller's GrA Golf, P-Tabor Acura)

And finally, what was the most powerful car to ever run a North American event?

(Sprongl's GrB Audi??)

Powerful...well, there was Bill Holmes' monster truck that took him from beginner to seed 1 in one season. It turned out a serious amount of horsepower. Of course, it was pushing a pretty heavy chassis...

One of JB's Audis certainly has to be in the running...if it wasn't in Group B tune, it was sure close. Bruno Krebich had a Sport Quattro, too...and ran it not that long ago.

Someone might argue that the Subaru WRC(?) car that ran a few events deserves a mention.

Carl Merrill's Truck
Carl Merrill's Escort
Barry Latreille's Talon
Sprongl's S2

also:
Bruno Kreibich's Audi?
Buffum's Sport Quattro?

all would probably be on the short list - I think the truck was probably at the top (BGN V6 motor, I think). AFAIK both Latreille's and Sprongl's cars were less powerful than the Escort (but were still over 400hp).

There is a wonderful piece from Baie des Chaleurs in the mid-90s of Carl's Escort outrunning the TV helicopter on the long concession road straights. Canada still had no restricors for a while after the SCCA went to 40mm.

Most powerful?

How about the Lancia and Pug that ran at Olympus in 88? Averaged about 70+ through the capital forest. Very violent cars. Getting a bit close to the ditch? Punch it and send a river of rock from all 4 wheels. Shot that stuff about 300 feet on the Porter Creek S curves.

The WRC car that Lovell ran at Rim had to be pretty close too. He wasn't even driving that hard and spanked the tar out of everyone.

JB's Audi that he destroyed at STPR has to be on this list too.

- My take:
Hannu Mikkola's factory Sport Quattro in 1984 when he totally out-classed Buffum & Co.....
- 700+ HP IMSA spec all alu engine (Sprongles had one on these beauties as well)
- Mikkola didn't even breath hard after stages....it was SO easy!
- Maybe Doug Shephard can tell something about the ride?

A west cost Volvo did make something like 515ft/Lbs on 9psi of boost, it later ran rallys with 13-15psi of boost...

That volvo is a 3L Turbo'ed V6 with all kinds a special bits inside, alas it has not been to the dyno in a long time so it is hard to tell how much it makes these days.

A yellow VW Kit Car was rummered to make 242Hp at the wheels to likely take the Gp2 record.

The 84/85 Bat Car Quattro likely was the most HP in a AWD car.

Is Scott gonna run one of them again? That car made me drool.

Dick Turner's IH Scout from years ago. Allegedly over 600HP unless my brain cells are short circuiting again.

And his EXP wasn't any too low on ponies either.

The owner told me it's 4.3 Busch Series V6, dynoed at just over 500 HP at the crank. Last I talked to him (LSPR 03) it was for sale.

From a mildly modded LS1/LS6? Not likely.
I've heard 450 flywheel, it looks like more 'cause he's a good driver.

That's far from mildly moded. Russ O'Blenes is "the" tuner and builder on that Pontiac. If you don't Know who Russ is, he is the brains behind every high out GM product in the last 10 years. You are wrong Mike, that car was making 600 HP on the peak and soon to be more once Russ gets his hand made sheet metal intake done, and some more tuning time. They will more than likely get 700 HP soon!

Well I heard it had kryptonite pistons and 942 horsepower. It uses monkey's blood for lubrication in place of oil. It uses so much fuel, they don't even use injectors...just straight from the pump to the cylinders. And I heard it has two transmissions in series...just in case one of them breaks.

I love all the conjecture and speculation. I had the pleasure of working the Mazda booth at SEMA IAS with Ed Bergenholtz for a while. He just put it right on the hood to stop people from asking. "1200 HP--8 sec. @ 190mph"

He said it stopped alot of the "How much pawr duz that thang have?" and "How fast is that there car?" questions.

Sidenote...some of these FWD drag cars are pretty baddass!

...so now it's 600, at altitude, from a normally aspirated LS motor?

Dyno pulls for pink slips!:7
