Four of the best known and most respected competitors from Australia's showcase car rally, the storied Targa Tasmania, will take on the challenging roads of Newfoundland as the Australian Team in the 2002 Targa Newfoundland international rally.

The four - one former winner of the Historic competition and three competitors in the Classic category - will carry the Australian flag at the start of the six-day, 2,300-kilometre competition in September.

The four are:

John Lawson, in his fabulous 1938 Alfa Romeo Mille Miglia Spider, is a two-time winner of the Historic class of the famed Targa Tasmania rally. The supercharged Alfa is one of three of its kind in the world and has been lovingly restored using original components. John competes with one of his sons as co-driver. John is from Melbourne, in the state of Victoria.

Len Cattlin, in his powerful 1967 Ford Mustang fastback, is a highly respected Australian classic rally competitor who came within 300 metres of a class win this year, when the car broke the drive train on the last day. Len's wife, Gayle, is the regular navigator of the bright yellow Mustang. They live in Melbourne.

Kerith Buckingham, with nine Targa Tasmania events to her credit, is one of the most experienced competitors in the rally. She drives a beautiful silver 1963 Porsche 356C and counts many national and club events to her credit in Australia as well as five Targa Tasmania 'Targa' awards. Co-driver is Carol Fitzgerald, also of Victoria in Australia.

Peter Buckingham will compete against wife Kerith and the rest of the field in his 1965 Porsche 911. A versatile and highly experienced competitor, he has won seven Targa plate awards in 10 Targa Tasmania rallies. Peter is from Victoria.

"That competitors of this stature are attracted to our event is really an honour," says Targa Newfoundland organizer Robert Giannou. "These people are going to come half-way around the world to see Newfoundland and try our event, and that is the biggest vote of confidence this rally could have."

The inaugural Targa Newfoundland is patterned after the highly successful Targa Tasmania in Australia and Targa New Zealand rally events, and is expected to attract up to 200 cars for the September 13-22 event. Targa Newfoundland will start and finish in St. John's and the route will cover portions of the Avalon, Burin, Notre Dame and Bonavista peninsulas on the Canadian island province, including more than 500 kilometres of Targa stages on closed roads. The event is staged with the co-operation of Octagon Motorsports (which administers Targa Tasmania) and is sanctioned by the Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS).
