I'm having a difficult time finding the correct replacement for the driver side axle for a 1984 GTi. Seems the taper on the outside CV joint of the replcement axle is different than the one it's replacing. When installed the cv joint makes contact with the hub. I've tried three different axles to date with no luck. The car does have the 10" brakes from an A3. I didn't do the conversion so I'm not familiar with everything that was changed. Any idea what axle I need to find?

Hello Griswold

Do you have the 90mm or 110mm diameter cv joints? I believe most A1's were equipped with 90mm from the factory. Some folks upgraded to the 110mm for increased strength and durability.

I've performed a few 90mm to 110mm axle swaps on the A1 VW's.(GTI's and Jetta)

Sometimes all that is required is the new 110mm axle and the new larger final drive flange on the gearbox. But on my particular A1 GTI I also had to change the hub carrier because it was only large enough to accept the 90mm axle shaft. I picked up the 110mm hub carriers at the local salvage yard.

I hope that sheds some light.
