Cochrane, AB ? The 2002 edition of the Cochrane Canadian Tire Rally of the Ranchlands centered on the town of Cochrane was a great success for both teams and spectators alike. Extremely variable conditions proved more than a challenge for some teams and certainly added an element of drama to the rally?s conclusion. Out of 18 stages only 17 counted towards the final result as a stage was scrapped due to safety considerations. Many fans showed up to cheer on their favorite teams, encouraged by the warm weather and the freshly unique adventure promised by the rally. In town stages drew local and first time visitors while the forest speed tests lured the experienced and dedicated fans.

The rally leader from the very first stage was last year?s winner, Janusz Komorowski with a new co-driver, Keith Morison in a newly acquired turbocharged all-wheel-drive Eagle Talon. Komorowski and Morison stormed through the in-town stages opening up a commanding lead over their opponents while maintaining a certain safety cushion in their spirited drive. The win was not to be however as the Eagle?s engine dropped to two cylinders 4 stages from the finish. They managed to limp to the finish line but dropped to 2nd place overall.

In the heat of competition were three other teams including the eventual rally winner, Jim Dewitte with Joe Proteau, driving a modified Isuzu Impulse RS. Dewitte crashed out of the event in 2001 and so returned determined to succeed. His constant nemesis throughout the rally were Zibi Szewczyk with Tomasz Karzynski driving a Toyota Celica All-Trac and Scott Trinder with Andy White from British Columbia driving a Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. The three teams swapped places throughout the event until Szewczyk?s retirement after hitting a bridge on the 9th special stage. Richard Michaluk and Eric Grochowski?s rally could not have gone any better as they won the production class in their Toyota Corolla on only their first performance rally.

The slippery conditions on some stages saw Peter Hill with Barry Gurnsey in a Toyota Corolla stuff it in a snow bank. Martin and Graham Burnley in a Subaru Impreza RS also found the attractive force of snow banks irresistible while Scott Trinder performed a donut in the middle of stage 9.

The 2002 edition of the Cochrane Canadian Tire Rally of the Ranchlands was supported by Cochrane Canadian Tire, Rocky Mountain Coffee Company, Shell Canada, City Wide Towing, Cochrane Times, and Traditional Hardwood Floors.
