It wasn't. It was a prototype for the WRC, and the first rally I ever attended.

I know, but I couldn't ignore that insane Audi! Hannu Mikola and Arne Hertz taught us a lot about class at the 1985 prototype event. Also, the 1986 Olympus was for driver's points only, so we got to see Kankkunen and Alen battle for the crown, but Toyota Team Europe was the only full works team at that one.

My favorite memory of that car... I was on highway 8, near Summit Lake, and it's wet, pouring rain, standing water, spray everywhere. I'm just hydroplaning along, maybe a little over the speed limit, trying to stay on the pavement, and this thing goes past me at 90+.

Just Marku Alen on his way to work. Ever notice how there are some sounds you just don't forget?

For me it was a night stage, in dense fog, in Capitol Forest. It was the Branding Iron stage, and I was in the gravel pit standing high on a bank. The Delta S4 and the 205t16 came through with all sorts of things glowing hot, snarling and spitting... Maximum attack through pea soup fog. Sigh.

- So you guys think they were going fast?
- Not so, according to drivers Alen and Kankkunen!
- One of my finest tapes is "SuperCars" - in Finnish - which I watch quite often and dream how exciting rally was long time ago...
- Both drivers are complaining at the Olympus: "Way too twisty and slow! We can't go fast, we gotta 'pussy-foot' in 2nd and 3rd gear".

- They don't seem to go THAT slow...but compared to 1000-Lakes, yes, it was slow.

When I DNFed at Olympus 86 I stumbled onto Arne Hertz and we walked along and I asked if I had read right that he and Hannu Mikkola were having all sorts of problems with the 'Batmobile' the year before like I read and had watched, and saw they beat Buffum in a very good Quattro by like 12 minutes or so, and Hertz, always smiling, said "Noooooooooo, not so much troubles really, the main thing was Hannu was calling out things while we were making pace notes."

12 minutes of the best talent we have ever seen in the US and they're 'just driving, making pace notes"

I wonder if there's any photos of Car 42??????

By the way, in those days result somehow including the stage 'winners average MPH' and the stage distance at the top; here are some stage averages.
ss1 63.9
ss2 62.9
ss3 65.8
ss4 64.9
ss9 68.7
ss8 70.9
ss17 68.6
ss18 61.2
ss39 60.3

final STAGE times
Alen 5h 28m 10sec
'Hoo ha'* Kankunen 5h 28m 36sec !!!!!!
John Buffum 5h 50m 24sec

22 minutes.

And Buffum was similarly faster than us mere plebes at US events
