How long have you been in Colorado Adam? You should know by now that Denver meteorologists have one of the hardest meteorology jobs in the nation. Until a few hours out, they never totally know what's going to happen.
Though the government guys at NOAA up in Boulder have finally gotten a little bit more confident, their now saying 70% on Friday night, 1-3 inches, but still keeping Saturday snow at only 50%.
Weather.com is way more conservative, with a 30% chance of rain Friday, and their going for broke with 80% chance of snow Saturday, but their not calling the amount.
Weather Underground's all in with 70% on Friday and Saturday, but 2-5 inches of snow for Friday, but also not guessing for Saturday.
All of these sites have fluctuated wildly thoughout the week. The only constant is that it will be warm tomorrow and cold and windy Saturday. Wind, for those of you not from Wyoming, is good a getting rid of most of the snow on the ground and piling it in big drifts instead, especially in the prairies.
This is going to be one of those real rally type conditions though. Who's bringing the hot cocoa. Should we get some snow shoes and skiis for the workers. I'm going to bring some snow boots and my parka/scooter winter gear to loan out to a ATC or FTC worker. Everyone have working heaters in their rally cars?
I have a feeling my harbor freight heater is going to be a bit overworked. just talked to a friend at NOAA and he's very certain the track will be covered with at least 5 inches by saturday morning, and also suggested that racing wouldn't be the difficult part, but that its storms like this (snow with 45mph+ winds) that typically close I-70 east of the toll road
Anyone figured out a way to get to CORE without using I-70? If I-70 gets shut down, will the event be rescheduled assuming workers might not be able to make it out there? After the debacle with last nights CHCA meeting, I'm just wanting to have a firm grasp on what's up.
Also, just curious on the studded tire decision if there ever was an official change to the supps? Can we use whatever tires we want as long as they're using DOT studs, or must it be a DOT tire and DOT studs? I know that not DOT snows (Michelin C5 or Yoko snow tire) are ok as long as they're not studded.
Well I don't know for sure if you guys will get the same storm, but I think this is the one that is headed south. Anyway it just started here and it is snowing sideways here and I can't see the mountain that is literally a 2 minute drive from where I am standing right now.
I know I am about 4 hours north of DeerTrail so maybe it will dump everything on us. Weather.com says this storm was supposed to hit us tomorrow and move to colorado on saturday, but we are already seeing it.
Its unlikely Chris and I will make it. We haven't got the car to start yet.
I'm bringing enough gear to get through the whole weekend. The hard part is deciding where to set up my tent. Behind the trailer, protected from the wind but might become integrated into a snow drift.
EDIT: Deer Trail is now under a Blizzard Warning. New NOAA computer models as of 1pm today have the storm coming in further south and stronger than expected. I've been advised of possible blizzard conditions east of denver. Sustained winds of 25-30mph with gusts to 50. Potential of over 10 inches
Any way i can get a RA exception to race my truck in Open class?
its really the towing conditions on the way home that i'm worried about. i can't risk getting stuck out there overnight if the roads are closed due to visibility. i'm going to wait til 6am tomorrow to make a logical decision.... the car and trailer are ready to go
Hmmm. Maybe I should have grabbed those snow tires for the rally car earlier in the week. I guess worst case scenario we're stuck at CORE for the weekend. Glad my tent is rated for 140 MPH winds and my bag for -40. Maybe it'll get really cold and I can pretend like I'm in the Canadian arctic.
don't shoot the messenger .... just trying to be practical
Forecasters have been flaky all week, but it's pretty clear now there is a high potential for white out conditions. How do we expect to run a race in blizzard conditions?
I am seriously concearned about the weather now. Alison has a good point I am all for rallying in all weather, but blizzard conditions not only sound miserable but dangerous.
Is there a drop dead time in which they will call the event off? Is it even being considered? Seriously, i am nervous about driving out there tomorrow. And you can't have an event with out workers. Are people going to show up? I know we are all die hards, but you can't expect the volunteers to be.... just saying.
I am praying that the storm isn't what they think it will be.
If it gets postponed a week I can enter. If not I will be buying some electric socks and long johns. That way I stay warm until I slip and fall into a puddle and then I will be entertainment for everyone as I get electrocuted and sparks shoot out.
Sorry... long day at work. We hope to shake down both of our cars at the next rx. and lets just start with way more expensive... atleast until we complete a stage...
The weather is concerning. If anyone is injured, what are the odds we can get them to a hospital in a reasonable amount of time?
To run an event from the competitors point of view in a blizzard isn't that bad, but for the workers, it will be miserable.
I was packed up and leaving when I heard from Mark. Just unpacked the car and was like, oh shit, I better get on and let people know. But ya'll way ahead of me.
There is talk of going out there for fun tomorrow. My car's home for the count. I don't think I have an open weekend between now and Temple so hopefully it's not rescheduled for too soon. Car felt good on 13th driving back from the gas station though. Pulled over and cranked up the boost. My neighborhood loves us.
I asked Mitch and he said probably not since it would be slow because of the weather.
