Just picked up my project. A 1993 Mazda Mx-3. I'm hoping some one else on here has done one of these for rally so I can borrow some knowledge.

If some one could put me in touch with either of them that would be great. I'll just be doing basic stuff but if there is anything mx-3 specific i should know I'd love to pick some ones brain.

Al lies. I'm not fast. :) James is usually faster and his is arguably more stock than mine. We just finished our first year of rally and this was our first rally build.

Also, the MX3 is pretty much the same as the BG Mazda chassis used by 323s, Proteges and Ford Escorts. A few of use have successfully run Escort GTs, so there is a good bit of rallying knowledge of Mazda chassis. I always figured the MX3 was a bit too tight inside, but there are plenty of people who have raced them in road racing as well.

We have found it to be very tight inside and both Gawboy and I have girlish figures. Mostly the height. You need to fit the cage *very rightly* to the roof otherwise you'll struggle.

As much knowledge as their is regarding the BG platform, the parts sure have run out. :( It seems like we're always 5-10 years late to get an aftermarket part that we want/need.

Dude, as a potential grass-o-cross car this is fine as is..Of course ANYTHING is fine for grass-o-cross..
As a potential one day maybe stage rally car you're creating problems for yourself from the get go: cramped room and lousing availability of wear items like hoods and fenders and doors and glass..Thoese wear out a lot for noobs....

There IS howeber one ray of sunshine and thats there there is a model Maz-dog with a pretty OK---not "good" but OK ---set of ratios:

3rd 1.29 1.00 1.31 1.00
4th 0.92 0.70 1.03 0.70
5th 0.73 - 0.80 -

So have fun with this but think hard about it as a real stage rally car....

Thanks for the input guys. I really do appreciate a better idea of what I have gotten my self into. As far as the Grass-o-cross...I wish I could but living in utah its pretty much dust-0-cross. I had planned to run the car in dust/grass-o-cross to get seat time and just because its fun. I have no delusions of one day having a junker and the next day it being a fit stage car. This will be a long term work in progress. Being perfectly honest my car knowledge is limited to the basics so if nothing else I'm down about $400 bucks to have a car to tinker with and learn on.

Dan I'll definitely get an email out to you a get more of a feel what I'm in for.

I'm actually running it as a stage car. So, I can speak from experience on a few things (despite being noobish):
0) The car is reasonably light, the engines pretty damn reliable, and the OE suspension (strut hats notwithstanding) has been very tough to break.
1) It's totally correct that spare body panels are tough to find. I live in the rust belt and have been collecting hoods, fenders, and roofs while we go. I have rafters full of the junk and a very understanding friend who has held onto a complete shell for me in his shed. That plus some luck with a very amused junkyard owner had us go from a pretty serious roll (down a hill, into a black hole, on the roof twice, landed on the co-driver door) at Ojibwe to competing at LSPR. We got luck. We screw up too many more times and we won't be so luck.
2) The gear box I have is aggravating. The ratios aren't terrible but the 1-2 jump is ugly and there never seems to be a good gear for L3s and R3s. It's seemingly a choice of bouncing off the limiter or lugging it through.
3) We've got the car more comfortable over time. This was our first build, the cage builder's first rally cage, and it was a learning experience for everyone involved. Things have improved but I'm now exceedingly aware of how "roomy" rides like my Corolla and Outback are on the inside. I was even staring down a VW New Beetle and thought, "There is MILES of room to put a cage in that thing."

Shot in the dark.. any interest in another shell?

I saw you run at LSPR last year but wasn't able to meet you during the Parc Expose before we had to get to our work assignment.

I've got a '92 MX-3 GS, with no title, that I got for parts years ago, and it's just sitting on my trailer. I planned on using the steering rack and not much else, for my turbo escort wagon.

Would you be interested in this shell, for body panels and other bits? The price? Completely Free if you come and get it, maybe a bit of gas money if I transport it for you. I'm in Baraboo, WI, which isn't really super-far from you.

There's no driver door window, no gas tank/fuel pump, no interior except door panels, no rear wiper. Engine does not turn over, I've never got far enough to see what's making it bind up. I can take more pictures if you want. Here's about the only picture I can find, from 2007 when I got the car:

Let me know if you'd be interested, I need to get this car gone soon, and I'd rather it be of some use to a rallyist than scrapped just to make room.
