The second decade of Targa Newfoundland begins with a revised route for the five-day September motorsports classic that features two new stages in new communities, a new stage in a familiar Targa stop, a return to a revised competitor favourite and revisions to three popular stages on the Targa Newfoundland 2012 route.

New competitive Targa stages have been announced for Day 5, when the communities of Sunnyside and Freshwater join the Targa family, and a new stage is introduced in the popular community of Carbonear. Day 5 is traditionally the toughest for competitors after a week of grinding competition.

Back in the schedule for Day 4 is a competitive stage in the town of Burin, where competitors will see a revised version of a memorable stage that starts after lunch at the beautiful Oldest Colony Trust facility.

Revisions have also been made to the competitive Targa stages at Colliers/Conception Harbour (Day 1), New-Wes-Valley (Day 3) and Harbour Mille (Day 5).

“The Targa route is a living, breathing thing,” explains organizer Robert Giannou. “Something changes every year. It helps keep the route fresh for competitors, and helps to bring Targa to fans in new communities. The event is a changing mix of the new and the familiar, and it’s why previous competitors keep coming back and why new competitors leave amazed at the Targa experience.”

“We’ve had exceptional cooperation from many of our communities this year, who have seen a decade of Targa development and success,” Giannou adds, “and have become pillars of this event.”

Owned and operated by Newfoundland International Motorsports Limited, Targa Newfoundland is one of three internationally recognized Targa motorsports events in the world. The 2012 competition starts in St. John’s on September 8 and concludes back in the capital on September 15. The 11th annual rally will cover more than 2,000 kilometres of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of Newfoundland, including up to 450 kilometres of closed-road, flat-out Targa stages.
