Desert Storm is the second round of the Rally America Southwest Region, and Bilstein Southwest RallyCup Series presented by Lucas Oil featuring Saturday coefficient 3 and Sunday coefficient 2 rallies on the unpredictable desert floor of western Arizona.

This year’s competition is fully dominated by Group 2 BUT do not count out the Production Ford Focus and Open Lite Subaru. They will be going for again the popular Lucas Oil 2WD Championship and Racetech AWD Championship under the umbrella of Storm Attack. Teams are coming from Colorado, Nevada, Arizona and California to come out for the ninth annual Desert Storm. Next year we will be fully celebrating its ten-year anniversary! Two national guys are competing and one is going for the 2012 Rally America 2WD Championship. But the regional competitors are ready and tough to beat. So we know this year the field will be strong. So we are going to enjoy the St. Patty’s Day weekend in style- rallying!

Saturday and Sunday the teams will traverse the roads used back in the 1860’s onto the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds in western Arizona, a test of suspension and patience.

Saturday’s event is a full day’s worth of competition, with over 84 stage miles and 13 stages. This is where they will wind their way between Saguaro cactus and Ocotillo plants. Then returning to the headquarters city of Blythe, California, where competitors will get ready for the Lucas Oil Four lap Super Special on the tarmac at Lucas I-10 Speedway, with a special rally course in the middle of the track specially designed for the event.

Sunday will find competitors back on the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds to finally wind down the weekend’s competition with over 41 stage miles. The awards ceremony is back at the Palo Verde College Lucas Oil Automotive facility. It is a gearhead’s dream.

Desert Storm stages are generally graded and fast, punctuated by low lying rough washes that can be both sandy and hard at the same time. The transition from fast to “gotcha” will challenge all entries, regardless of experience. The weather can vary from sunny and hot, to mild and cool all in the same day with the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the mineral-enriched mountains.

Rally America will again be scoring real time, along side our expert Mike Gibeault and scoring system. Also Facebook us on your comments this weekend and we will keep you up to date how are things shaping up.
