Former MSA British Rally Champions TEG Sport kick off their 2012 campaign with drivers Jukka Korhonen and Arron Newby spearheading the challenge starting with this forthcoming weekends Rallye Sunseeker.

27-year-old Finn Korhonen won last year’s Pirelli UK Star Driver award and will be joined by 17-year-old Briton Newby in the Carnforth-based team’s Pirelli-backed Skoda Fabia R2s for the six-round British Rally Championship.

Korhonen is the first driver from outside the British Isles to win the Pirelli Star Driver prize and joins ex Pirelli TEG Sport drivers Adam Gould, Keith Cronin and Elfyn Evans on the roll of honour whereas Newby, son of TEG Sport proprietors Stuart and Lynn, will tackle the series following a successful season claiming fifth place in the 2011 Kick Energy Pirelli Formula 1000 Junior Rally Championship.

Newby, who will be co driven by regular Robert Wiseman Dairies competitor Julian Wilkinson in their cow-liveried car, contested his first gravel event only last weekend whereby he claimed a class award on the Procters Coaches Riponian Rally and also had a successful test earlier this week. Korhonen, from Siikajarvi, will be co driven by his namesake Mikael in the 170bhp, 1600cc car which will run with the striking black and yellow Pirelli livery.

Jukka Korhonen: “I’m very grateful to Pirelli and TEG Sport for this fantastic opportunity and I fully intend to make the most of it. I really enjoyed my first taste of the Skoda Fabia R2 during the shoot-out and I think that we can fight for overall wins with this car. Coming to compete in Britain with Pirelli is one of my dreams and I am so happy to have achieved it.”

Arron Newby: “Naturally, I’m a little bit apprehensive about making the big step up to the British Championship but excited at the same time to be given such an amazing opportunity. We are treating this as a two year project with this year being one for learning and then hopefully pushing for some good results in 2013. I’m grateful to all of my sponsors, especially Robert Wiseman Dairies for their faith in me and hope to repay them over the next two seasons.”

Stuart Newby: “This year is going to be exciting for us as a team as it’s the first time we have the opportunity to work with a flying Finn and I also have my son competing for the first time as well. We are looking forward to getting the season started and hopefully we can start the season well on Rallye Sunseeker this weekend.”
