Ziptie Rally looks ahead to a busy summer as the team works to complete a new rally car and rebuild another. Rally Minnesota took a toll on both of ZRT’s cars. Car 171, a 2004 Open Class Subaru STi, of Carl Siegler and Dave Goodman suffered a season ending wreck about halfway through stage 2. Coming over a crest and into a right hand corner, Carl misjudged the entry speed and the car impacted a tall bank at 90mph. The car went into an air-born spin and landed on its wheels blocking the road some 30 feet away.

The crash damaged the unibody to an extent where the team decided to build a new chassis rather than repair the car. A few days after returning from Rally Minnesota, Carl purchased a 1996 Subaru Impreza to begin transforming into the next iteration of car 171. Although the STi had extensive structural damage, the majority of the suspension, drivetrain and engine components remained intact and usable for the new build. Carl and crew are employing many lessons learned from the last car and expect to have the car completed for LSPR in October.

The second ZRT car, 858, of Anthony Israelson and Tim Anderson finished the Northern Lights half of Rally Minnesota 2nd in Open Class and 7th Overall. This was Anthony’s first outing in an Open car having run the previous season in Open Light. This was also the first time co-driving for Tim and the duo clicked early setting into a comfortable pace impeded only by brake issues on the longer stages. Unfortunately day 2 did not go as smoothly and the car slid off the road and rolled onto its roof. Luckily the roll was very soft and the car suffered minimal damage. Anthony anticipates having 858 ready to rally for the July running of Nemadji Trail.
