Another First for a Quebec Driver…

Recently-crowned 2010 Rally America Champion, Antoine L’Estage added another achievement to his impressive list this past weekend after winning a medal in the Rally Car Racing discipline at the ESPN X Games, a feat that no other Canadian can claim prior to this year.

Quebecois L’Estage, of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, competed in both the Rally Car Racing and SuperRally events, held in front a large crowd at the Los Angeles Coliseum and presented live on ABC and ESPN. In an event that excluded the use of co-drivers since last year, the complicated layout of this new course proved to be the deciding factor in several rounds of the Rally Car Racing event, as L’Estage moved on from his first round against Rally America championship runner-up Bill Bacon before eliminating Sweden’s 2009 X Games gold medalist Kenny Brack in the quarter-finals. “I wanted to be competitive but I didn’t have huge expectations going into the X Games since my large Rockstar Energy Drink Mitsubishi Evo X is less nimble for this type of course than the majority of the other cars in the competition. I got used to the course fairly quickly and I also had luck on my side”

In the semi-final round, Antoine L’Estage lost to Rockstar teammate and 2007 X Games gold medalist Tanner Foust before Foust went on to become the eventual winner of both the Rally Car Racing and Super Rally events. “I’m definitely not embarrassed getting knocked out by Tanner. He’s a very talented driver and North America’s best hope in European RallyCross, which is similar to what we do at the X Games” commented L’Estage, who shares his result due to insufficient time to run the scheduled bronze medal match. The Super Rally event saw L’Estage finish third in a heat that included Foust, Brack, and Swede Hubinette, missing out on the Last Chance Qualifying round by two seconds.

Rockstar Energy Drink had athletes on all steps of the podium as showman Brian Deegan won the silver medal in both disciplines. “This was an extremely successful outing for Rockstar and I am pleased with all the visibility they earned because of our results and success at the X Games. As for me, I’m happy with my performance and the car has no major damage, which can be pretty rare in X Games competition” explains Antoine. “As the only team competing in the entire Rally America and Canadian Rally championships, my entire crew has been working extremely hard and under tight deadlines. They can now have a little well-earned break before we head to Rallye Defi for the next round of the Canadian Rally Championship in September.”

In addition to this bronze medal, Antoine L’Estage holds the 2010 Rally America Championship title, two Canadian titles (2006 and 2007), two North American titles (2007 and 2008) and twenty-two overall victories in Canada and the United States. Regular co-driver Nathalie Richard has earned five national championship titles (two Canadian and three American) and her thirty-five outright national rally victories. In 2009, she won her fifth North American Championship for co-driver.

Antoine L’Estage competed in the ESPN Summer X Games 16 with the support of Rockstar Energy Drink, Royal Group, Yokohama Tires and VP Racing Fuels. He and Nathalie Richard also participate in the entire 2010 Rally America and Canadian Rally championships with the additional support of Mitsubishi Canada, Drenth Motorsport Gearboxes, Garrett Turbos, Energie Cardio, Libra Racing and Driver’s Edge Autosport (OMP).
