Team Broken was at it again, entering three cars for the only United States Rally Championship (USRC) tarmac event on the 2010 calendar. With all three cars finishing on the podium in their respective classes, they now sit in solid positions to attend the final round of the USRC in Prescott, Arizona.

Off to an excellent start to her debut season on the USRC circuit, Erika Detota and teammate Jason Smith did a tremendous job in the inclement weather conditions to keep a podium position. With their 3rd place finish this weekend, the team is firmly in 1st place in the 2WD category and is set up nicely to compete for the 2WD Championship title. “I was a little nervous about the fast speeds of tarmac” Detota admits, but she quickly adapted to the pace and “saw vast improvement over the weekend,” says her co-driver.

Finishing first in Production All Wheel Drive, Matt Gottlieb and Austin Gager took their second podium class win for the season. The pair’s solid outcome this weekend landed them 4th place in USRC Overall standings. With a full season under their belt it is clear this team has quickly become one to reckon with. Gottlieb and Gager’s great performance ended with 3 “Top 5” stage times. “I really enjoyed the mountain roads where the high speed sections took real commitment and trust in the car and my co-driver,” Gottlieb said on Saturday.

After coming close last season to winning the national title in Production AWD, a high speed roll at the championship round put William Petrow and Jeremy Neyhart out of a car for the 2010 season opener. After missing the first event they were back racing a newly prepped AWD class ’93 Subaru Impreza, proving how much of a threat they can be. “It’s great to be back on the stages…William is pushing harder than ever,” Neyhart said.

A late attack on the top runners found the team in 3rd place overall, only 11.9 seconds behind the seasoned team of Cyril Kearney and Marc McAlister who finished in 2nd place. Their efforts did not go unnoticed with 10 “Top 5” stage times out of the 17 special stages and the teams first ever stage win on the final stage of the event. Petrow was excited about his accomplishments and proud of the rest of his team stating, “The rally was very difficult at first to get back up to speed and regain confidence, but it is great to be on the podium again and have the whole team finish so well!”

The conditions were tough and typical of Rally New York events, rain on Friday and low (40F) temperatures on Saturday with rain and snow. The event covered nearly 100 miles of tarmac special stages in the western Catskill Mountain region of New York.

The team will be back on the stages soon, so keep an eye out for the Broken Team!
