The 724 car heads north to Canada for its first international rally

The term “flat” in rally racing means full throttle, as fast as your car – and your wits – will let you go. WASHPA Racing has put that term to the test with a full season in its inaugural year in stage rally. Caution the Canadians and tighten your harness, the 724 MR2 is on its way to tear into an otherwise pristine Canadian forest (treading lightly of course) for the Rallye Defi Sainte-Agathe/Duhamel on September 5 and 6.

Although 2008 may be WASHPA’s launch year for stage rally, the team already dominates in the points standings in Rally America Eastern Regional G2 Class Championship and has a significant lead in the 2WD Overall Championship. Team owner and driver Jim McClelland will pilot the mid-engine, rear-wheel drive 1987 Toyota MR2 rally car, but regular co-driver Jon Price has previous obligations for that particular weekend. Instead, Mike Huml, of Slow Boy Racing, a high performance engine machine shop and parts retailer, located in Indiana, Pennsylvania, will provide his own brand of expert co-driving services.

But wait, there’s more…

Slow Boy, it turns out, is actually in the business of making teams wicked fast. In fact, he has agreed to be a major, active sponsor in the expansion of WASHPA Racing, a startup rally team with indelible gusto. When asked about the new joint venture, Mike shared the following comments: “I am very excited to be able to help Jim McClelland and the WASHPA team for the remainder of the 2008 season. Jim has a passion for the sport that is almost unrivaled at any level and his commitment to the sport of rally is immeasurable. It is going to be a pleasure working with a local team and helping him work his way up the ranks in Rally America events. I know he has what it takes – and most of all I know he has fun doing it. That’s what this sport is truly about.”

In the mean time, WASHPA Racing is putting the finishing touches on the 724 car in preparation for the journey, which will be a 12-hour, 650-mile trek into the Great North, a place that cherishes the sport of rally racing as much as their European counterparts. Of course, the Hitchcock Insurance Agency is also playing an active role in the success of WASHPA’s foray into the realm of rally.
