RSport Rally driver Scott Trinder and co-driver Bill Westhead finished the Mountain Trials Rally in second place overall. A total of eighteen cars entered the event, eleven of which were Subarus, making for some very close competition.

This rally was Trinder’s first event this year, while Westhead had not competed since 2005. Right from the start the duo found their rhythm and were up to speed. “Considering the power of the car ahead of us, we were quite happy with our pace and the stage times we were setting,” said Trinder.

“Scott was driving well this weekend. He set some personal best stage times and was very focused throughout the rally, creating a decent buffer over the cars behind us,” said Westhead.

The Rsport Rally team put on quite a show for the spectators with their dramatic 3-wheeled entry into one of the hairpin turns during the Active Mountain Raceway stage. “I really had fun in the car this weekend and focused on the pace notes, trusting them fully,” Trinder commented. “There are many fast corners on this rally that appear much slower than the notes describe. You really have to commit and just go for it,” he said.

During the first two legs of the rally the stages offered little tolerance for any off-line driving, as many large rocks lingered close to the edges of the road. “Right from the start I felt that some teams would fall victim to the many ‘gotcha rocks’ lurking on the road’s edge,” offered Trinder. “Bill’s detailed pace notes allowed us to miss all but one of these potentially race-ending threats. Fortunately the rock we hit did not do any damage to the car or tire…we were really lucky!”

The next event in the 2008 Western Canadian Rally Championship for the RSport Rally Team will be the Bighorn Rally, held in Alberta on August 16th and 17th.
