O’Sullivan/Wagner Take Victory in Round Two of the 2010 MaxAttack!(tm) Rally Series Presented by Danza del Sol

Posted on 03 August 2010 by ben

27 two-wheel-drive rally cars battled over the fast New England Forest Rally stages; second through fourth were separated by eight seconds going into the final stage

The second round of the 2010 MaxAttack! Series, presented by the Danza del Sol winery, was very similar to the previous round in Oregon: it was a hot, dusty affair with a very strong entry list. Twenty-seven teams registered for the MaxAttack! event, once again with a wide range of machinery, but barely half the field made it to the end of the rugged two-day event.

The fastest two-wheel-drive car at the New England Forest Rally was the Dodge Neon SRT-4 of Lauchlin O’Sullivan and co-driver Karen Wagner. They were clearly the class of the field all weekend, and their domination was sufficient for fellow competitor Eric Burmeister to describe Lauchlin as, “…on his own planet, I don’t even know where he’s from!” The Dodge team won by almost four minutes, despite losing some time over the course of the weekend due to a flat tire and some lingering dust.

Behind the O’Sullivan and Wagner was an epic battle for second through fourth. Leaving the final service in Errol, NH, there were three teams separated by fewer than 15 seconds. Local favorite Chris Duplessis and co-driver Catherine Woods had a slight advantage in their Scion XD. The Scion had been equipped with a limited slip differential, and was lightened since it’s debut at Oregon Trail, but it was still a relatively stock car. Josh and Jeremy Wimpey experienced a litany of problems with their Golf over the course of the weekend: they lost their power steering early on, were caught behind a slower car which damaged their windshield, they had a flat, and they broke a motor mount. Yet they were still in the game. Eric Burmeister and Dave Shindle, in the Mazdaspeed3, had brake problems the first night which put them three minutes back of the others, but they too clawed back to this thrilling finale.

After the tenth stage, with just two stages remaining in the rally, Duplessis/Woods led Burmeister/Shindle by 12.3 seconds, who in turn were ahead of the Wimpeys by just 2.3 seconds. Following Stage 11, Duplessis still led the other two, but his lead was reduced to just 3.5 seconds up on the Wimpeys, who had edged past Burmeister/Shindle by 4.2 seconds. This meant that going into the final stage of the rally, there were just eight seconds separating second through fourth in MaxAttack!. It was all to play for on the final stage.

On the last stage, Middle Dam, Duplessis and Woods took the stage win, edging the Wimpeys by two seconds, to secure second place by 5.5 seconds. The Wimpeys in turn edged out Burmeister and Shindle by four seconds to hang on to third place by 8.2 seconds. Finishing fifth in MaxAttack!, and the top rear-wheel-car, was the Datsun 280z of Greg Healey and Brian Johnson. The Datsun in turn beat out the Greasecar Motorsports cooking oil-powered turbo diesel Rabbit of Justin Carven and Geoff Clark, who edged out the Canadian duo of Martin Walter and Ferd Trauttmansdorff in a Nissan 240SX. Luke Sorensen and Josh Jenny had a great run going in their Saab 99 turbo, but a flat tire and a problem with the jack on the ensuing tire change cost them over ten minutes on Stage 5.

Running well early on, and buoyed by their Oregon Trail victory, Dillon Van Way and Ben Slocum were holding down second until Stage 9, when the engine on their Ford Focus suddenly and mysteriously quit. They were able to get going again, but despite eventually finishing the stage they were forced to retire due to the engine management problems. Stage 9 was also unkind to a number of teams who made contact with the Maine scenery or had mechanical problems on the stage.

The Top 5 finishers in the first round of the 2010 MaxAttack! series, and prize money won, were:

1. Lauchlin O’Sullivan/Karen Wagner, Dodge SRT-4 ($1500)
2. Chris Duplessis/Catherine Woods, Scion XD ($1200)
3. Josh Wimpey/Jeremy Wimpey, VW GTI ($1000)
4. Eric Burmeister/Dave Shindle, Mazdaspeed3 ($800)
5. Greg Healey/Brian Johnson, Datsun 280Z ($500).

The 2010 MaxAttack! series champion and Jake Himes Cup winner will be decided in a spectacular “Shootout” fashion in October. The top finishers from the west coast Oregon Trail Rally and the east coast New England Forest Rally are expected to meet in the middle and fight it out at the venerable Lake Superior Rally, on the upper peninsula of Michigan. Of course the same $5,000 event prize fund will be up for grabs for all registered two-wheel-drive entrants at this 2010 season finale.

The Rallysports Group of America would like to thank the organizers of the New England Forest Rally for their gracious assistance and support, all the volunteers (who ate a lot of dust this weekend!), and Rally America.

Bangor’s Last Ditch Racing were challenged by the 2010 New England Forest Rally and persevered, taking to the podium in Saturday’s race

Posted on 26 July 2010 by ben

The sixth and final round of the 2010 Rally America Championship, this year’s event saw more than 65 teams from across the USA step up to take on the notoriously rough stages in the woods of Western Maine.

LDR started the event with a new ECU in the car. The Link G4 Extreme ECU was tuned via the internet with the expertise of Dave Heerdegen of DTECH Motorsport in Tauranga, New Zealand. “Using Skype, we allowed Dave to remotely log into the laptop while it was connected to the car. We were able to get a very good tune on the car that saw it running the best it has in many events,” said driver/owner John Cassidy. “The tuning was completed in three very long days. We had a great time working with Dave, but the 14 hour time difference, working my day job and working all night in the shop was a bit surreal and not the way we prefer to spend the week prior to an event.”

Friday’s stages saw the team having some shifting issues after the jump on the first stage, the Mexico Super Special. The transmission kept popping out of second gear and Cassidy was forced to drive with one hand while holding it in gear. The assumption was that the geometry on the shifter was keeping the shifter from fully engaging the gear. The crew trimmed the shifter surround and sent the crew back out. The issue progressed over the next couple of stages. Said Cassidy, “I knew something was wrong-the car would now stay in second, but would pop out of 4th. We had planned on making time over a stage that had several new miles added to it for this years’ event, but I spent most of it holding it in 4th and driving with one hand, trying to do my best Sitg Blomquist imitation. Dave told me that was the fastest I’d ever driven with one hand.”

At the second service, Cassidy asked the crew to check the engine and transmission mounts. The driver’s side engine mount was indeed broken, likely letting go over the jump on the first stage. Without a spare mount, the crew used a ratchet strap to secure the engine for the final few stages of the day. WIth the engine no longer bouncing up into the hood, Cassidy and Getchell headed back out and set some competitive times, besting their personal record on the famous Concord Pond stage by 1 second with a ratchet strap holding the engine in the car!

With assistance from the Valley Tire team of Steve Quigley and Dana Nauss, a new motor mount was fitted for Saturday’s stages. Not unexpected, the car shifted well and stayed in gear! The team were hampered by a mysterious lack of boost for the day. The problem was consistent though, and Cassidy and Getchell felt it better to work with what they had, rather than potentially create more issues by starting down a diagnostic pathway in the middle of the event.

“We pushed fairly hard and had a great time on the rough stages. Having proper anti-lag on the car was an eye-opener. We were taking some corners at speeds that were initially a bit unexpected, but we got used to it quickly. We haven’t had ALS on our car since T-2, and that was a few years ago. We won three consecutive Regional Open Championships without it, but it sure is a lot more entertaining with it!”

The team already has parts on order for further development of the car in preparation for the remainder of 2010 and the 2011 season. “We’re going to optimize some of the systems on board, and we’ll be starting with the wiring system, and then focusing on the cockpit. The driver/co-driver interface with the car needs a little work. Having our office laid out efficiently increases our comfort level in the car, letting us focus on faster stage times.”

Cassidy and Getchell are honored and proud to have the best crew in the sport: Bronson Crothers, Duncan Matlack, Drew Gladu, Drew Simpson, Erik Lee, Cullen Derepentigny. Special thanks to Sean Glenn for joining the crew for this event. Cassidy would like to thank his close friend and personal trainer Scott Kahkonen for all the punishment in the gym-it makes it all easier on stage!

Round 2 of the 2010 MaxAttack!(tm) Rally Series Presented by Danza del Sol Thunders into New England

Posted on 14 July 2010 by ben

28 two-wheel-drive rally cars will do battle this weekend at the New England Forest Rally

The second round of the 2010 MaxAttack! Series presented by the Danza del Sol winery will, like the opening round, be a hard-fought competition between nearly 30 two-wheel-drive rally cars. The New England Forest Rally, taking place on July 16 and 17, will be based at the Sunday River Ski Resort near Newry, Maine and will utilize stages in both Maine and New Hampshire. Once again there are a number of manufacturers represented, with Volkswagen being the most popular of the 13 marques. There are front-drive cars, rear-drive cars, turbocharged cars, a pickup, and even a Volkswagen Rabbit powered by used cooking oil.

A number of teams must be considered as potential favorites to take the maximum 25 points towards the prestigious Jake Himes Cup, along with $1500 for the event win. Defending MaxAttack! series champions Lauchlin O’Sullivan and Karen Wagner are venturing east from California to compete in a speedy Dodge Neon SRT-4. O’Sullivan is a stunt driver when he is not behind the wheel of a rally car, and was once a driver for the Mitsubishi U.S. factory rally effort. Eric Burmeister makes a welcome return to the series in another powerful turbocharged car, the 400 horsepower Mazdaspeed3. The 2008 champion will once again be joined by Dave Shindle in the co-driver’s seat. Martin Walter and Ferd Trauttmansdorff are bringing a Nissan 240SX with an SR20DET engine across the border from Ontario, and should wow the spectators with some fast sideways driving.

Local hero Chris Duplessis, from nearby Mason Township, Maine is also expected to contend, though he will be driving a Scion XD rather than his familiar Volkswagen Golf, just as he did in the opening round in Oregon. The Scion has received some performance modifications since Oregon Trail and he and co-driver Catherine Woods should have lots of local fans cheering for them. Upholding Volkswagen honors will be twin brothers Josh and Jeremy Wimpey, who are always very fast in their Golf, and brothers Matt and Andrew Bushore in a Jetta. Young Louisiana hotshoe Dillon Van Way is keen to repeat his Oregon Trail victory earlier this year; he and Ben Slocum compete in a Ford Focus. Also expected to be quick in a Focus are Mark Williams and Shane McCann.

There are some interesting vehicles entered in this event. Jim McClelland and Darlene Jones, from Washington, PA are driving a Toyota MR2, the only mid-engine car in the field. As mentioned, the turbodiesel Greasecar Motorsports VW Rabbit of Justin Carvin and Geoff Clark is engineered to run utilizing used cooking oil as its fuel. Jim Perrin and Lee McElhinny are running the only pickup in the event, a 1986 Jeep Commanche. Internet sensation Bill Caswell is bringing the same $500 BMW 318i that he used at the 2010 Rally Mexico World Rally Championship event, competing this time with co-driver Paul Donlin.

As well as Duplessis, there are a number of participants with ties to Maine. Robert Sockalexis, co-driving for Kevin Turner in a Subaru, is from Old Town. From Gray, ME comes Kristin Przybysz, teamed with Meghan Roy in a Subaru. Michael Reilly, from York, is teamed with co-driver Josh Benthien from Portland in their new Mainiax Motorsports HTPerformance Ford Focus. And making a return to the rally stages for the first time in seven years is Mike White from Camden; he and co-driver Jared Lantzy will be running a brand-new rally car, a 1984 Saab 900.

The first event in the 2010 MaxAttack! series took place at the Oregon Trail Rally in May. The opener proved to be an event-long struggle between the Ford Focus of Dillon Van Way/Ben Slocum and the Honda CRX of Cody Crane/Billy Irvin. Ultimately the Ford prevailed, although it was close. Rounding out the top five were Chris Duplessis/Ron Zaras in a Scion XD, Gaylord Van Brocklin/Steve Secviar in a VW Golf, and Brian Gottlieb and Pat Darrow in a Toyota FX-16.

Last Ditch Racing-defending and three time Rally America Eastern Regional Rally Champions, are ready to take to the stages at the 2010 New England Forest Rally

Posted on 12 July 2010 by ben

The New England Forest Rally, the fifth and final round of the 2010 Rally America National Championship is headquartered at the Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine. More than 65 teams from around the US and Canada are set to take the start. The event has been voted a driver’s favorite many times in the past.

Last Ditch Racing’s driver John Cassidy and co-driver Dave Getchell are no strangers to the event. 1999 was Cassidy’s first rally. Getchell joined Cassidy a few years later. They’ve competed in the event every year since. Highlights at NEFR include a fifth overall finish in 2008 and first place in both Regional events. 2009 saw them push their ailing Subaru STi rally car in an epic battle with New Hampshire’s Wyatt Knox. Last Ditch Racing came out on top, sealing their third consecutive Eastern Regional Open Class Championship.

The 2010 season has been mixed for the team. At the 100 Acre Wood Rally in Missouri, the team experienced an exhaust failure, causing them a DNF in one of the two Regional events. A podium in the second Regional event meant they returned from Missouri with some points, they then headed to the Team O’Neil Rally in New Hampshire in May. Having a clutch failure at the start of SS 6 while in a 4-5 way challenge for the lead, leaves the team playing catchup in the 2010 Eastern Regional Championship.

Cassidy remains philosophical about the state of the 2010 season. “Although we’re getting older, Dave and I seem to be getting faster with each event. We were pleased with our pace at the Team O’Neil Rally and would like to think that we’d have continued to be in a fight for the win if our clutch had held together. Having won the Eastern Championship in our class three years in a row, we don’t have much to prove at this point. What we do want to demonstrate is that we’re not slowing down-that we’re continuing to develop the car, develop the team and have a bunch of fun. I think that’s what people will see this year at New England Forest Rally.”

The crew has been busy continually developing the car, with the most recent upgrade being an upgrade to the ECU, or engine control unit. Said Cassidy, “An upgrade in the ECU will enable us to better tune the engine for full power and take advantage or motorsport specific features that are enabled in the software.” The team welcomes the assistance of Fine Line Imports of Santa Rosa, California with the installation and tuning of the ECU.

The team will give back to the local community by partnering with Mr’s B’s Village Store, at 120 Main St. in Peru, near the famous Concord Pond rally stage. The team will be on hand with the rally car and service truck from 5-7 PM, Wednesday, July 14th, signing autographs and allowing fans a chance to get up close with an Open Class rally car.

Maine Businesses Support Rally Car Effort

Posted on 08 July 2010 by ben

For Mike White, this year’s New England Forest Rally marks both his return to the sport he loves and a return to his home event, thanks to the help of several Maine businesses.

After a seven-year absence from stage rally – where modified street cars race flat-out against the clock on closed forest roads – White and his RallyHo Motorsports crew are making final preparations of the team’s newly-built Saab 900 rally car. White will challenge the roads of northwestern Maine and northern New Hampshire on July 16-17 with co-driver Jared Lantzy of Silver Spring, Maryland, beside him calling route instructions.

A dedicated group of Maine owned businesses have contributed to RallyHo’s efforts to return to rallying. White hopes that by using rally to help drive interest in Maine businesses, he can help the sport and his sponsors grow.

Yachting Solutions of Rockport is Maine’s premier yacht services provider, offering sales and brokerage, service and repair, crew and yacht management for clients worldwide. In addition to world-class customization and refit services, Yachting Solutions is also Maine’s Hunt Yachts representative and a dealer for both Steyr and Volvo Penta marine engine systems.

Maine Indoor Karting of Scarborough is the state’s fastest and best indoor karting facility, offering formula-style karts on a fast course with non-stop wheel-to-wheel action. Novices and experienced racers alike can drive karts in leagues, get driving lessons, rent the facility for parties, or just arrive and be racing in minutes.

Sebago Brewing, headquartered in Gorham with several brew-pub restaurants in southern Maine, is known for their selection of craft-brewed ales and beers as well as their support of the local community. Sebago Brewing’s Gorham location features summer car and motorcycle shows help the Gorham Food Pantry, and they also sponsor local music and sporting events.

The New England Forest Rally is the final round of the Rally America national series and the eastern round of the Max Attack! two-wheel drive rally series.

Hometown Hero Rising Up The Ranks

Posted on 02 July 2010 by ben

Chris Duplessis, from Bethel, Maine has claimed the Rally America 2WD championship once again. This is his 8th championship win in 5 years. Chris has retired his 1990 VW Golf and will be racing in his hometown of Bethel, ME on July 16-17 at the New England Forest Rally in a 2009 Scion xD with the 0-60 Rally Team. He will be trying to clench his 5th class win this season and repeating his win from last year in the MaxAttack! series.

“I am really excited for this year’s race! We will be back in the 0-60 Rally xD. The guys at Design Craft have been busy repreping the car and making it even more of a capable rally car. The xD is a really fun car to drive and I’m interested to see how the changes work! The goal for the weekend will be to win after clinching the championship one round early, we have no pressure and will be going flatout!”

At the end of July, Duplessis will be competing at the coveted X Games 16 in Los Angeles, California in the Rally Car Racing portion of the event. “I grew up watching action sports and immersing myself in the sport of rally. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought rally would be in X Games! Ever since the first year of X Games Rally I wanted so bad to be competing, but X Games has always be reserved for the top level open class drivers or celebrity invitees. This year ESPN and Rally America announced that the top level two wheel driver competitor may get an invite so my goal for this season was to be on top when it was time for invites.”

Duplessis is the second athlete from Bethel to make it to the X Games. Simon Dumont, a friend of Chris’ has won multiple medals at the Winter X Games in freestyle skiing. More details are to come in the next couple weeks about Duplessis’ ride at X Games 16.

Follow all the X Games action on www.expn.com

Come and meet Chris Duplessis at the New England Forest Rally on Thursday July 15th at the Phoenix House at Sunday River and Friday July 16th at Parc Expose at Sunday River and at the Mexico Recreation Park. More details are available at www.newenglandforestrally.com and you can downloaded the free spectator guide at www.rally-america.com

Last Ditch Racing Celebrates Open Class Regional Championship Hat Trick!

Posted on 27 July 2009 by ben

nefr09_ldrpost3
Last Ditch Racing overcame adversity to clinch the 2009 Rally America Eastern Regional Open Class Championship at this past weekend’s New England Forest Rally held in Bethel, Maine. Round 6 of the 2009 Rally America Championship, the New England Forest Rally is a driver’s favorite and has a reputation for being somewhat rough and rocky.

Friday’s stages consisted of two super specials and the famous Concord Pond stage. Hoping to better their top 10 stage time from 2008, it became apparent to Cassidy and Getchell early in the stage that the car was down on power. The team did what they could to minimize time losses, with Cassidy driving the car a bit further into corners and trying to carry speed where possible. A failing driveshaft was later identified and fixed during the overnight service.

Saturday saw the start of the Berlin Rally and the first two stages saw the team setting competitive regional times. But it was not to last. Cassidy could see white smoke trailing(and entering) the car as early as stage three. In service, oil seen on the skidplate and the crew surmised that there was an internal engine issue that was overpressurizing the crankcase, forcing oil out under load.

The team were battling with the Team O’Neil team of Knox/Wilburn in their Group 5 Mazda Speed3 for the Rally America Eastern Regional Open Class Championship. Knox had been leading the Eastern Regional Championship after a strong run in an Open Class Subaru at STPR. But Knox was having issues of his own-a gearbox leak causing concern.

The situation forced Cassidy/Getchell to change their mental approach to the race – ignoring the smoke and whine from the engine under load while still pushing as hard as possible took all energy they had. They had to resort to carrying supplemental oil onboard to top of the car before and after each stage. The final stage saw the two teams separated by mere seconds. With a 30 mile transit back to the finish at the Sunday River Resort after the stage, Cassidy/Getchell were carrying a full fuel load and 6 liters or supplemental oil. “We were the heaviest we’d been all day, and we knew the car was sick. We also knew that we had to pull out the best run of our day on our third run through the short, tricky stage,” said Cassidy.

The stage went without incident and the crew felt they were clean and tidy. Now the long transit back to Sunday River, and the final MTC, began. The crew stopped every 12 miles or so to pour more oil into the engine. “It was all we could do to nurse her home. Every time we’d put the engine under load uphill, I’d see a thick fog of smoke blowing out the back. I don’t think the line of cars behind us appreciated it very much, but we were in survival mode.”

The team arrived at Sunday River and Co-Driver Wilburn found Cassidy. Cassidy/Getchell were 5 seconds quicker their last time through the stage and secured the final podium spot for the day, and the Eastern Regional Open Class Championship by a mere 3.3 seconds! The regional competition was very close, and all of the competitors agreed that it made for some good drama during the day. “We all came to race, and having to fight for seconds at the end of a physically and mentally taxing day is something we soon won’t forget,” said Cassidy.

Cassidy ended the 2009 Rally America Eastern Regional season first Driver in the Open Class and second in the Overall driver points. Getchell took second overall Co-Driver and second in Open Class. Last Ditch Racing has secured the Eastern Regional Open Class Championship the last three years in a row and the Eastern Regional Overall Championship in 2008.

Once their engine issues are sussed, the team is looking forward to competing in Canada later in the season as well as returning to the Rally America Regional Rally Championship in Missouri in 2010.

And finally, Last Ditch Racing would like to thank their 2009 Partners for their support:

Duplessis/Woods win the second round of Max Attack! at New England Forest Rally

Posted on 23 July 2009 by ben

nefr09_dupless
Racing in his hometown of Bethel, Maine, Chris Duplessis and co-driver Catherine Woods finished first overall in the Max Attack! two-wheel-drive championship this past weekend. The pair also won both regional rallies, the Drive To Your Future Rally and the Berlin Regional Rally, held in conjunction with the New England Forest Rally.

On Friday night of the event, the famous Concord Pond special stage was run and Duplessis stunned thousands of spectators with the seventh fastest time of the night on the stage. The duo beat many highly powered, all-wheel-drive cars on the stage even though Duplessis’ two-wheel-drive Volkswagen Golf only has 140 HP. Also competing during the weekend was Subaru Rally Team USA’s Travis Pastrana, Ken Block and Dave Mirra.

Duplessis’ goal for the weekend was to not have to jack-up the car during the rally. As a testament to Chris’ fast but safe driving, only fuel was added to the car. No tires were changed or rotated. The service crew only had to perform minimum work to keep the rally car on the road to victory.

The young team of Duplessis and Woods are hoping to make the trek out to Bemidji, Minnesota to compete in the last event in the Max Attack! series. The competition at the Ojibwe Forest Rally will be fierce with Duplessis looking forward to going head-to-head against Lauchlin O’Sullivan, winner of the first round of Max Attack! at Rally Idaho.

Duplessis is the reigning two-wheel-drive National Champion and has won six Regional and National championships over the past three years.

Pastrana Wins, Block 2nd as Subaru Rally Team USA takes 1-2 Finish at 2009 New England Forest Rally

Posted on 21 July 2009 by ben

nefr09_srtusa4
Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana overcame a close battle with his Subaru teammate Ken Block to win the New England Forest Rally, Round 6 of the 2009 Rally America National Championship. The Subaru duo of Pastrana and Block, each driving identically prepared 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally cars, fought all weekend with former Canadian Rally Champion Antoine L’Estage. Mechanical trouble for L’Estage and a late spin and tire puncture for Block handed Pastrana the victory on the final stages. The win extends Pastrana’s points lead and puts him one step closer to winning his fourth consecutive Rally America National Championship.

The 2009 New England Forest Rally featured highly technical and rocky gravel logging roads near the Maine/New Hampshire border. Pastrana, partnered with his co-driver Christian Edstrom, entered the rally with a 21-point lead over his closest challenger and said his strategy from the start was to avoid taking unnecessary risks and get his car to the finish in one piece. “I wasn’t the fastest driver here this weekend,” said Pastrana. “It was hard to keep up with Block, but we were just close enough to capitalize when he hit some trouble at the end of the rally.” The win at New England is Pastrana and Edstrom’s fourth win from six events this year.

Ken Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino were the pace setters for most of the 2009 New England Forest Rally, winning five of the eleven competition stages. However, a spin and a puncture on the final loop of three stages cost Block over twenty-five seconds and allowed Pastrana to slip into the lead. “It’s extremely frustrating,” said Block at the finish. “I put myself in the right position to win and it didn’t work out for us.” Although it wasn’t the victory Block had hoped for the strong 2nd place points haul lifts Block from 5th to 2nd Overall in the Rally America National Championship standings.

A highlight of the rally again this year was the Concord Pond stage, a favorite among drivers and fans for its numerous jumps and serpentine-like flow. Block was able to crush his stage record on the 5.6 mile stage by an impressive eight seconds. “Our Subaru was perfect and the grip was amazing,” said Block. “That stage means a lot to Alex (Gelsomino) and I so to break our record and by such a large margin was really exciting for us.”

In the Super Production Class, Subaru Rally Team USA driver Dave Mirra and his co-driver Derek Ringer were battling for the class lead all weekend when they were hit with an engine problem. With a long stage to go prior to the next service stop Mirra and Ringer opted to retire from the event in order to prevent further damage to the engine.

A contingent of Subaru Rally Team USA heads next to Germany for the Baja 300 Powerdays, where Ken Block will be in has been invited to compete in his Subaru Rally Team USA 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car. The event will feature a stadium style, two-mile stage in Lausitz, Germany that will feature side-by-side racing with jumps similar to the X Games Rally event. Invited drivers include WRC stars Petter Solberg, Gigi Galli, and Kris Meeke as well as off-road racing and motorcycle racing stars.

Following the promotional Baja 300 Powerdays event will be the much-anticipated X Games 15 to be held again at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. The Rally Finals are scheduled to be televised live on ABC television on Sunday, August 2nd, from 3pm EST – 6pm EST.

Subaru Rally Team USA is proudly supported by Subaru of America, Inc., Subaru Tecnica International (STI), Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT), DC Shoes, BFGoodrich Tires, RECARO, Alpinestars, Motul, Exedy, GReddy, and Vermont SportsCar. Travis Pastrana wins 2009 New England Forest Rally

Posted on 20 July 2009 by ben

nefr09_rapost500
Subaru Rally Team USA’s Travis Pastrana and co-driver Christian Edstrom sailed to their fourth win of the season at the New England Forest Rally Saturday, to further extend their lead in the national championship.

Pastrana entered Round 6 of the Rally America championship with a 21-point lead over his closest challenger, and said his strategy from the start was to avoid taking unnecessary risks and get his car to the finish in one piece.

“It’s hard to know you’ve got that little more speed in reserve and not use it, but it’s that little more that can get you,” he said. “We weren’t the fastest here this weekend, but I’ll take the win however I can get it.”

Ken Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino set a blazing pace at the start, but lost more than 20 seconds to a spin early Saturday afternoon, then had a flat tire. They were unable to make up for lost time in the final stages of the day and finished in second-place overall.

“It’s extremely frustrating,” said Block at the finish. “I put myself in the right position to win and it didn’t work out for us.”

Even so, the result moves Block into second place in the championship, behind teammate Pastrana.

Canadians Antoine L’Estage and co-driver Nathalie Richard were also in the running for a win early in this event, but they lost time to a power steering failure in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Saturday afternoon and finished in third.

“It’s good to taste champagne again, but I really wanted to win,” said L’Estage after the ceremonial champagne spray. “I thought this morning we had a shot at it.”

L’Estage is developing a new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X that debuted with Tanner Foust in the US earlier this season under a sharing arrangement. He hasn’t had much luck with the car so far, battling the teething problems that are typical with a new car build. But he says the car has potential and he’s looking forward to the next round.

Bill Bacon and co-driver Peter Watt finished in fourth place; Art Gruszka and co-driver Lukasz Wronski rounded out the top five.

The Super Production class win went to Roman Pakos and Maciej Sawiki in their Subaru STi, while John Conley and Keith Rudolph took the two-wheel drive win in their 2003 Dodge SRT-4.

The roads on this event are generally wide and fast, but peppered with massive rocks that can do big damage to competition cars. As is typical, attrition claimed a number of contenders. Subaru Rally Team USA’s Dave Mirra and co-driver Derek Ringer were out with engine trouble on Saturday, while Andi Mancin and co-driver Maciej Wislawski retired after Day 1, apparently with engine issues of their own.

It was tough luck for both drivers. This event presented a good opportunity for Mirra to make up some ground in the championship against Super Production rivals Piotr Wiktorczyk, Jimmy Keeney, Matt Johnson and Pat Moro – all drivers who are sitting out this round as they prepare for X Games.

The X Games contest is the biggest event on the calendar for invited teams and cars are due on the other side of the continent in just over a week. Open class drivers Andrew “ACP” Comrie-Picard and Tanner Foust have also opted to sit this event out while they prepare for the Los Angeles contest.

The two-wheel drive competition was fierce this weekend, with more than two-dozen drivers running the weekend’s two regional events: Friday’s “Drive Your Future Rally,” presented by the National Guard, and the “I Can’t Drive 55″ Rally on Saturday.

Among those teams is the interesting last-minute entry of Lucy Block and Chrissie Beavis in a Volkswagen Golf. Block is married to Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block and this was her first-ever event as a competitor. Chrissie Beavis is a regular championship co-driver for Foust and competes in California as a driver in the regional series. The duo swapped driving and co-driving duties over the weekend.

Twenty-one teams also signed up to run this event for the MaxAttack! subseries, designed to raise the level of two-wheel drive rally competition. Chris Duplessis and Catherine Woods set the fastest two-wheel drive times in their 1990 Volkswagen GTi during the weekend’s regionals.

For 2009, organizers will pay out a total cash purse of $15,000 USD to be divided among the fastest teams competing in the MaxAttack! events.

All results are considered informational pending official race processes.

The Vermont SportsCar prepared 2007 Subaru provided to Fox will be emblazoned with striking Army National Guard artwork. Fox, co-driven by Jake Blattner, seeks to step up his campaign to earn Rally America Rookie of The Year honors by driving the higher specification Subaru.

“I’m very excited about this car,” said driver Mark Fox. “I’m really looking forward to driving the rally in a highly competitive car. I was able to test the car for two days this week and learned it’s like nothing I’ve ever driven before; it’s accurate, precise, nimble and fast. The level of its build and preparation is top notch. This is my first time competing at the New England Forest Rally so the strategy will be to stay smooth and try and finish with a good result. I’m aiming for Rally America Rookie of the Year honors this year. ”

The Friday Regional rally at this weekend’s New England Forest Rally has been named the “‘Drive Your Future Rally’ presented by the National Guard” and will be highlighted by a “Super Special” in the town of Mexico, Maine. Spectators will be have the opportunity to watch an entire gravel rally stage, complete with a jump, from start to finish right in front of them. Last Ditch Racing Celebrates a Decade of Rally at New England Forest Rally!

Posted on 15 July 2009 by ben

nefr09_ldrpre1
Maine’s own Last Ditch Racing heads to the the mountains of Western Maine and Northern New Hampshire for the New England Forest Rally, July 17-18.

Round 6 of the 2009 Rally America Championship will see Last Ditch Racing’s Driver John Cassidy and Co-Driver Dave Getchell celebrating their 10th anniversary in both the sport and the event itself.

“We’ve come a long way in ten years, and we owe it to our talented crew as well as all the talented crews that we’ve raced against that have shown us how to prepare a car, manage a team, and run an event. Very few people, other than fellow competitors, understand what we go through simply to get the car to the start of the first stage. We’re thankful to still have a passion for the sport and a desire to strap in and push ourselves to the limit.”

The event will see the LDR crew starting 16th amongst a field of 50 competitors from the US and Canada. 2008 saw the team place a career best 5th overall, narrowly missing out on a wildcard invite to the Summer X-Games in LA. “We had a dream race last year, and I’m hoping we can run a tidy and quick race. Above all, we’re going to have fun!”

Rally America Eastern Regional Rally Overall and Open Class Champions in 2008 and Eastern Region Open Class Champions in 2007, the LDR team is excited to be in the hunt for yet another regional Championship, currently sitting second in the 2009 Eastern Regional Championship. “We found a snowbank in February at the Team O’Neil rally and then had a power steering pump fail in Missouri. Both incidents cost us valuable time, but that’s what rally is about-keeping cool in the face of adversity and driving quick enough to scare yourself, but not quick enough to crash! We went on to finish both events and that’ll be the priority at NEFR-to finish.”

The team will pilot their Open Class 2003 Subaru WRX STi sedan, a car they’ve been continuously developing over the past few seasons. “The car’s in great shape and she’s ready to go play in the dirt!”

Friends and fans can find the team at the Phoenix House at Sunday River on Thursday night from 7-9PM. The crew will be signing posters and the team’s car will be on display!

Championship for Regional rally teams for 2009 – the other two rally events include Rally Idaho and the Ojibwe Forests Rally in Minnesota.

Although the New England Forest Rally will be contested over two days and 125 plus miles of gravel and forest stages for the National competitors, the Regional rally teams will compete on the very same roads as the National teams, but in two separate 1-day Regional rally events run simultaneously with the National rally.

Friday’s Regional rally will be known at the “Drive Your Future Rally” presented by the National Guard and will be highlighted by a “Super Special” in the town of Mexico, Maine. Taking place at the Mexico Recreational Area located just off Rt. 17 in Mexico, spectators will be have the opportunity to watch their favorite rally driver or team complete an entire gravel rally stage, complete with a jump, from start to finish right in front of them. A number of scenic spectator areas will be available along the competition stages where fans will be able to watch their favorite drivers compete. They will also be treated to a “Super Special” in Berlin on Saturday morning where teams will test their skills on a half-mile course that winds its way in and around the old Berlin paper mill site located on the north side of the city.

Also available throughout the 2-day New England Forest Rally will be a number of spectator buses provided by the Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine. The buses will depart from a variety of locations and take interested spectators out to the designated viewing areas along the rally course. Tickets for the spectator buses can be purchased the day of the event and will cost just $5.00 per person!
